Last week, Tom shot a '70s-inspired story with Makeup Artist Benjamin Puckey, Hairstylist Edward Lampley, and Model Kristine Froseth. It was a Thursday afternoon in our new studio space downstairs from our office. We could tell you more about it, but it was really all Benjamin's concept, so we figured we'd get out of the way. What follows is his email to us the day before the shoot, outlining the concept.

Subject: Tomorrow
Hi Tom,
So excited for tomorrow! Thanks so much for getting such a wonderful model to work with. I'm very happy.
This is the idea for the shoot:
I'm an avid collector of retro beauty images. I buy tons of vintage magazines and spend hours looking at the images. In a way, I believe that when it comes to makeup almost everything has been done before and probably better. There's a reason eyeshadows weren't super pigmented back in the day. A high level of pigment can be great for photography, but for everyday wear, it can look garish and overly “painted.” Softer colors are definitely more beautifying.
I wanted this shoot to be about a softer look. I'm really into washes of color on the eyes at the moment, and I wanted these looks to work for daytime. Colorful hues on the eyes, natural brows, naturally elongated lashes, freckles, skin that glows, and pretty lips is the direction I'm thinking in. And instead of contour, I feel that blush needs to make a comeback again.
I believe that skin should be in perfect condition to start with. Instead of covering up flaws, prevent them in the first place by using the right skincare and seeing a dermatologist. That way you can accentuate your perfect skin texture, which makes everyone look more beautiful. No need for any contouring—blush can actually take the place of that by applying it high on the cheekbones to shape the face in a youthful and fresh way. Blush is very personal, so apply it in the way that you feel best suits your face.
Eyeshadow shades with a little iridescence will look more luminous and “lighter' on your eyes than matte shades. I often like to apply a matte shade as a base and then add an iridescent shade in the same color family on top. The brushes I love to apply eyeshadow with for this type of look are soft and fluffy and not too small. I'll use the Nars #44 Precision Contour Brushto get the color close to the lash line and then the Surratt Beauty Artistique Smoky Eye Brush Petite to apply a wash of color to the lid and around the eye. We can always blend out any hard edges with the flat side of a Q-tip.
Do you think we need some simple tops for Kristine to wear? Or shall we ask her to bring things?
See you tomorrow,
Benjamin
