Anna Speckhart is a study in contradictions. She accessorizes concert t-shirts with a strand of pearls. Instead of buying clothes (“It's driving my agents crazy—they're like 'Put some heels on, Anna!''), she bought a farm in Illinois where she's learning to hunt.(“I didn't get anything—you have to be really patient,” she said about her first deer season.(“If I were from Texas, maybe I'd know a thing or two. I should move there and get into the Texas dating scene...I feel like there are some hot guys there. But forget the musicians in Austin, I’m looking for a full-on cowboy—a guy that can help man the farm when I’m working,”

Her area of hair expertise is similarly surprising—hot rollers. A testimonial:(“I cannot operate a curling iron. I just get bad curls. It’s so hard—I don’t understand the simplistic spiral curlers. Hot rollers just work. You can throw them in, put your makeup on, forget about it. Conair makes good ones. I have to have the thicker ones, large and medium. Small gets too Toddlers And Tiaras for me, which is not a good look. I use 12 and it takes around 15 minutes. If you’re not used to using them they can be really hot, you have to be careful. They have a protector and you just roll them up and let them set while you’re doing your makeup, or having a cup of coffee and reading the newspaper, and you take them out and you’ve got the bounce. It usually just comes out and it looks really good. If there’s ever a crease or I have tiny baby curls by my ears I’ll just use a flat iron and straighten them out. But for the most part throw some hairspray in it and kind of let it fall,”

As for where to shop?(“ TJ Maxx. I love a good deal. And since my mom is a hairdresser and she loves beauty supply stores we’ll go to Sally’s a lot, and she’ll send me home with some really good stuff. That’s probably where I got my first curlers, from Sally Beauty. I’m a Sally Insider,”
