'I have something for you,” a mystery man behind me whispered, outside a party back in February. A gift is a gift (and that line, in New York, could go very wrong), but a surprise encounter with Ben Gorham—the dreamy, tattooed 6'3' former basketball player and current mastermind behind indie fragrance line Byredo—is something to get pretty excited about.

The next day, a pristine white box arrived at my doorstep, containing three travel-size vials of my favorite Gorham creation, Accord Oud, along with a monogrammed python case with a magnetic closure. I scrounged around the bottom of my purse and took out all the other trial-sized bottles I'd been carting around, caps broken off, and replaced them with this objet d'art.
