Into The Gloss

“Growing up with an actress as a mom, I was exposed to the entertainment world at a really young age. I was always trying to emulate it—fancy glam, makeup, all of it. But I had just as much fun pretending I was a beauty YouTuber alone in my mirror.

I privated all my old YouTube videos—so sorry to my audience; I get a lot of complaints about that. [Laughs] But if you watched them back then, you’d hear 14-year-old me constantly saying, ‘I want my own makeup line.’ Beauty was always the thing for me. Then when I was 18, I did a bronzer and highlighter palette with Sephora and everything really clicked. I fell in love with the creative process. Sephora gave me so much freedom, and I helped formulate the products. O.Piccola is basically the grown-up version of that original palette. I’m not a big user of foundation or super heavy makeup; I love makeup that enhances my natural features, which is actually why I named the brand O.Piccola—piccola means ‘little’ in Italian.

I started working on the Bronze & Glow balms five years ago in California, but I wasn’t happy with the formulas at all. The lab was getting frustrated with me, and two years into the project, I scrapped everything and started over in South Korea—I really believe that K-beauty is the best of the best. We went back and forth on formulations forever. Something would come back too oily, or not hydrating enough, and we just kept tweaking it until it felt perfect. Everyone that I’ve given the balms to so far loves them, and that’s really all you can hope for when you put that much time into something.

SKINCARE
I did a BBL laser when I was in Korea—and I want to be very clear that it’s not a Brazilian butt lift. [Laughs] It helps with a lot of things, but I was mostly focused on discoloration and sun damage. They numb your face, then afterward you get these dark little freckles for a couple of days that eventually peel off. It helped so much. I also love facials, although I don’t get them that often. I’ve been seeing my queen Matty in LA since I was 15. She doesn’t have an Instagram or a website, but you can find her studio, Matty Skincare, on Third Street. She does really gentle extractions, and I always leave feeling like my skin is so much cleaner. I’m so loyal to her that I haven’t even tried finding someone in New York yet.

The older I get, the more I realize my body is really prone to stress and will process it in crazy ways. One time when I was 19, half of my eyebrow fell out. Then when I was on Dancing With The Stars, I got a bald spot the size of a quarter in the middle of my head. The doctor told me it was alopecia caused by stress. That definitely didn’t help my confidence. [Laughs] I switched to side parts the rest of the season while I got cortisone shots to help the area grow back in. Stress also triggers eczema for me, which is such a vicious cycle because then I get even more stressed.

As far as my routine goes, at night I’ll start with the Carrotene cleansing balm from April Skin—it’s one of the only cleansing balms that fully removes your makeup so you don’t wake up with black under your eyes. I got it when I was in Seoul in January. Then I’ll go in with the Allies of Skin Molecular Silk Amino cleanser.

Lately, I’ve been using Clarins’ Double Serum followed by Dr. Melaxin’s Cemenrete Calcium Multi Balm on my eyes. It came with these little eye patches that you wear over the cream for a few minutes to really push the product into your skin. After that, if my skin is super dry, I’ll use the Rich Cream from Augustinus Bader. Otherwise I’ll use Rhode’s Glazing Milk or Mimi Luzon’s Skincore Creme Oil—I’m newly obsessed with anything Mimi Luzon.

I don’t really do that much skincare in the morning. Most of the time I just wipe my face with a Clean Skin Club towel and Bioderma micellar water. Maybe I’ll tone with a Medicube Zero Pore pads or a Barefaced Toning pad. I do use Peter Thomas Roth’s Water Drench eye patches every morning. I keep them in the fridge so they feel really refreshing and depuff when I put them on. Then I’ll moisturize and apply SPF. EltaMD’s tinted SPF is such a classic and gives the tiniest bit of coverage without any heaviness.

My mom is really passionate about sunscreen—she takes incredible care of her skin. She loves to golf, but my sister and I joke that she dresses like a beekeeper when she plays. She wears two gloves, a hat, a mask, glasses, long sleeves, pants, and something covering her neck—not one part of her body is exposed. We always tell her she looks insane. My sister’s the same way—you’ll never catch her tanning. Meanwhile, for me... I know it’s bad, but I like how I look tan, so I’ll worry about that in 10 years. I always wear sunscreen though. I like Coola’s classic SPF 50 or a classic Neutrogena sunscreen. Kopari also makes a nice one with shimmer, but sometimes it feels a little intense for a regular Monday.

If I have a photo shoot the next day or I’m feeling a little dead after a night out, I’ll sleep in a Medicube PDRN Pink Collagen face mask. My head might be pounding, but at least my skin looks good. [Laughs] I love Medicube in general—their Booster Pro is amazing. I only use it once a week, though, because it’s so hard to stay consistent with devices. Ideally I’d also wake up and use my NuFace every morning, but that’s just not happening.

MAKEUP
I own foundation because I love makeup and collect products like a hoarder, but I really don’t wear it unless a makeup artist puts it on me. And I’m not just saying this because I made the product, but I use my Bronze & Glow balms every single day without fail. They’re so easy to use. I like to place bronzer on my nose, forehead, cheeks, lips, jaw—literally everywhere. And I love highlighting the tops of my cheekbones, the tip of my nose, and the inner corners of my eyes. I love a ‘glow from within’ look, so I didn’t want the highlighter to be too glittery or too wet, but it does have the slightest bit of shimmer that looks like the sunlight is hitting your cheekbones.

Then I’ll do a dot—literally just one dot—of concealer under my eyes. I use the ones from Tower 28 and Kosas. I feel like they’re pretty similar formulas; both are creamy, light, and hydrating, which is important because my under eyes get dry pretty easily. Kosas also has eye color correctors, so I’ll blend out a dot of that first before moving on to concealer if I need to. Most of the time I blend everything with my fingers—especially when I’m getting ready quickly in the morning—but I recently rediscovered Beautyblenders. I don’t know why I ever stopped using them. Maybe I’ll hate them in a month, but they’re my obsession right now. I also always brush up my brows with Rare Beauty’s Brow Harmony gel and curl my lashes.

Makeup by Mario’s Soft Pop blush in Pink Peony, this really pretty bright pink, looks so good on my complexion. Even though it’s a cream product, it actually lasts on my cheeks. If I want to go in the opposite direction and lean into a full bronzed look, Rhode’s Pocket blush in Toasted Teddy is perfect. It makes me look like I was out in the sun a little too long.

I have tons of freckles, but I like adding even more—there’s something really youthful and fresh about them. I love the freckle pens from Colourpop and Freck, but I don’t really care what I use to be honest. Sometimes I’ll just use a brow pencil or a brown lip liner.

There’s not a day that I don’t overline my lips. L’Oreal’s Colour Riche liner in Au Naturale is the perfect brownie-nude-pink on me. I also like Sacheu’s Lip Liner Stay-N pen in p-INKED, but I will say using that product is an art form. You really have to play around with it to figure out how much product to use so it peels off well. Otherwise it’s just inconvenient and annoying.

I actually haven’t been able to use either one of my go-to shades much because I’ve basically had red lips for almost a year now—I did lip blushing with Tiago Sampaio. I thought lip blushing would also make my lips look fuller, but they’re still the exact same size… just red. [Laughs] I asked if they could overline my lips, but they said no because that would mean tattooing actual skin. Apparently they’ll do it in Korea, so I’m heading straight to Seoul next time. And by the way, lip blushing is super painful. They numb you, but it still feels like a needle is scraping your lips for two hours. For some reason the numbing cream started bruising my lips, so we had to stop using it and it was pure excruciating pain after that.

HAIR
I’ve been getting my hair cut by Lee Rittiner Jensen for eight years. I would never abandon him—he’s my tried-and-true. I cut it shorter because I was having an episode—just kidding. [Laughs] I do feel like I’ve had to ask myself if I’m OK every time I’ve cut my hair. I think I saw a girl on Pinterest with this hairstyle the day before I was going to an Armani event, and something about that made me want short hair. Meanwhile, Jacob Schwartz dyed my hair in August, right before I moved to New York. He knew I was moving so he gave me the most natural highlights that wouldn’t require a lot of upkeep—I haven’t touched my hair since.

I know people usually say not to, but a hairstylist recently told me that washing your hair every day actually isn’t bad at all. I wash mine every other day, though—I can’t stand the look of a greasy head. I’m using Living Proof’s Perfect Hair combo right now, but I also love Oribe’s Hair Alchemy duo. And every once in a while I’ll use the Rich Hydration mask from Olaplex if my hair needs it. After that, Garnier’s Curl Construct mousse is the only curl cream that doesn’t leave my hair crunchy. I still use it on my short hair, but I feel like it looked a little cooler on my long hair because it gave me the appearance of natural beach waves.

I don’t really know how to style my hair, but I can actually use the Mane Addicts round brush. You use it on dry hair, which I feel like is better for you? Maybe that’s something I made up—I’m not releasing a hair line, so don’t come for me. [Laughs] But the round brush is super easy to use. I separate my hair into three sections and roll the brush inward toward my face. Sometimes I’ll put on rollers for extra volume, especially when I have bangs. And then I love my Emi Jay paddle brush—in Pink Sugar obviously—and Big Effing Clip.

FRAGRANCE
Loewe’s Tomato Leaves candle feels like a classic now, but I completely burned through Liv:1 from Sarah Maxwell. The perfume version is one of the best smelling perfumes I’ve ever worn. It’s rose, vanilla musk, and white amber and comes in a roll-on. I’m not going to lie, I’ve definitely gatekept it, but I’m ready to share—I’m just going to buy a lot before this story comes out. [Laughs] Liv:2 is also great—that one has jasmine, cedarwood, and white amber. It’s interesting how scent can be so tied to memories. My mom always smells stunning, clean and warm. I don’t even know what the scent is—I think it might be from Chanel—but I associate it with her. It doesn’t happen super often, but if someone walks into a room smelling like that, I’m like, ‘Is my mom here?’”
