Natural Faux Freckles

This story ran as a part of Sun Week on ITG, a celebration dedicated to the one part of your beauty routine you can't opt out of: sun protection. (Lipstick is fun and all, but never life or death). We also launched Glossier's very own version. Explore more Sun Week content here. The future's so bright, gotta wear sunscreen.

If there's anything to glean from Sun Week, it's that sunburn is bad and sunscreen is good, and that's it, you've learned today's lesson, time to log off the internet. But the inconvenient truth is that sometimes, a little sun looks good on you. (Unless you are one of these people.) Bronzed, misted skin, with a hint of a flush is the stuff that French Elle magazine editorials are made of. It's the perennial summer look.

If there's anything to glean from six years of reading ITG, it's that makeup can do most anything. Blush and bronzer were literally invented to mimic the effects of a bit too much sun, without actually having to go out and procure those UV rays for yourself. The key is knowing how to wield them, and that's where makeup artist Wendy Rowe comes in—not only is she deft in the art of natural-looking, but she'll do you one better and give you a face that looks so makeup-free, it's got freckles and redness and a little too much sun. And it all looks, somehow, perfect.

Flushed & Bronze

It’s not a sunburn! To call it such would be close to glorifying sun damage, which is not what this is about. This is about the kind of flush you get on a hot summer’s day—a little heated, with added glow all over. It is effortless in every way except for how to achieve it, which is done by mixing more than a few unexpected shades, like red with brown, pink with nude. Luckily, you have all of these things already: Consider mixing your red lipstick with your bronzer, concealer, and pink blush of choice.

Once you’ve got the products, heed Wendy’s placement: on the tops of cheeks but blended downwards (that’s how the sun hits you), across the nose, on top of the forehead, and on the chin. Wendy used the red from Make Up For Ever's Flash Palette, plus a little Burberry Contour Stick in Medium, Glossier Cloud Paint in Beam on lips, and Burberry Fresh Glow Base in Golden Radiance. And you thought the perfect summer cocktail was a paloma!

Third Day Tan

You know when you've been on vacation, gotten some sun, and then it settles into the perfect color all over your body? Of course you don't! You never leave home without SPF 1000, a parasol, and opera gloves. But if you were to spend some time in the sun, it would look like this. To achieve, Wendy has a trick: Apply your blush and shading before foundation and concealer, then buff your coverage over top. It's like applying foundation, but adding undertones first, so the finish is that much more natural.

But back to the look. This is what happens to your sunburnt face a week or so later when it fades to tan [ed note: This doesn't happen to all people but does to some]—all-over bronzey goodness. Wendy layered Fresh Glow over top of the sunburnt look above (see how those tones shine through?), adding a little to the lips as a nude base, and going over it with Burberry Full Lips in Nude Beige. Plus some highlighter, Pat McGrath's golden Skin Fetish, to gingerly top them off.

Natural Faux Freckles

Towards the end of the shoot, Wendy pulled out the greatest natural freckling technique we had ever seen, using a MAC eye pencil in Taupe, MAC Pigment in Rose Gold and Black, and, oh, a toothbrush. She'll explain from here:

"Freckles normally have a blond, ashy feel to them—perhaps with a bit of gold—so I mixed gold and dark pigment with mixing medium, applied it to a toothbrush, and just flicked it all over. That makes it random, because people can't choose where their freckles are. Then I dotted in some other ones with an eyebrow pencil. Some are small, some are big, and it looks really organic."

She also gives you your new summer lip: the orangey red Burberry Lip Velvet in Regiment Red. Goes great with freckles. And maybe a bathing suit. And definitely sunscreen.
