"Hi! I'm Julie Doherty (@jules.doherty). I'm originally from France, but I moved to Brooklyn eight years ago and I currently live here with my husband and probably too many books and skincare products. I'm an executive assistant for a fine art handling company—it's a small and old school business where I get to do tons of different things, from storage inventories to customer service to managing our team at art fairs. I spend most of my downtime reading books and hanging out at the Strand, having gross conversations with my girlfriends, learning useless pop culture facts, and looking for Bill Murray out and about in New York.

I'm a Libra, too—I'm all about balance. I think that manifests itself mostly in my beauty routine, which is about harmony between high and low, lowkey and fun, and natural and chemical. I'm big on skincare, but when it comes to makeup, I'm a bit like Jon Snow—I know nothing. I use Kat Von D Liner to do a '60s-inspired cat eye every morning and that's it. If I go out, I would add a red lip. Growing up in France that was what all of my friends did, so I don't know any better. I like NYX Matte Lip Cream in Amsterdam or Revlon Balm Stain in Romantic.

Skincare is very important to me, and it always has been. I probably owned toner before I owned mascara. In the morning I wash my face with Bioderma Crealine water followed by Thayer's Witch Hazel toner with Rose Water. I like a more astringent effect but the scent is so lovely and the bottle looks great so I'm sticking to that for now. Then I apply Trader Joe's Antioxidant Serum and Antioxidant Moisturizer. The ingredients and results are stellar for such a low price point—I always go back to those products. Then I layer some La Roche-Posay Anthelios SPF 50 mineral sunscreen. I've tried a bunch of mineral sunscreens and this is the only one that does not turn me into a ghost. And, this might be a French cliché, but I never leave home without Homeoplasmine.

At night, I cleanse and tone and then dab some Mario Badescu Hyaluronic Cream under my eyes. It's rich, but it's what I like. I alternate between Caudalie Vinosource Overnight Oil and The Ordinary Lactic Acid 5% HA 2%. I've wanted to try Sunday Riley Good Genes for so long but could not pull the trigger, and then I heard about The Ordinaries and I'm so glad I did. This product is redefining my skin texture in amazing ways. My pores disappeared, my stubborn blackheads are gone, and I'm glowing. Then I finish up with Nuxe Creme Lissante 1Ères Rides. I also scrub once a week with Acure Brightening Scrub, best in the game. Or I'll do a mask. I love Fig and Yarrow's Clean Mask, Aesop's Chamomile Anti-Blemish Mask, and Sisley's Black Rose Mask. If that doesn't make you feel like Beyoncé, I don't know what will.

I use Trader Joe's Shampoo and Conditioner in the shower, which are sulfate-free so they don't dry me out. But I brush it in the shower with my fingers because I'm pretty lazy about it. Once in while, when I need to trim my bangs—and if I've had enough to drink—I'll ask one of my friends to cut my hair. I can be a control freak, but doing this feels amazing. If it doesn't look good the next day, I can always clip it—it's just hair. That's the most important beauty lesson I've learned, that there's no point in taking care of my face and body if my soul is not happy. So that's a priority. The best thing, for me, is to surround myself with good people. Oh, and it's OK not to like kale."
