'I met Briana Andalore, my business partner for my clothing line Franziska Fox, at a party in Yorkville. I remember she really liked my outfit. I also had a cat with me…I was kind of eccentric. I was 15, and the kitten was a baby—I found her somewhere, and I couldn’t leave her—she was too young! She just came with me everywhere, even parties.
I think I started going clubbing when I was 14. I remember I made a fake ID and laminated it myself. I forget what the name on it was, but I remember it was something so stupid. We went to Kinko's to do it. I don’t even remember, but we had these weird, fake college IDs and they were not as strict as they are now. When I was growing up, you could go to St. Marks with a note from your parents saying, 'Yeah, pierce my daughter’s navel. Throw a tongue ring in there, too!' It was much easier. Now when they card me and think I look too young, I’m like, 'Thanks!'
Back then, Briana and I were really into gay parties because the music was amazing, and we loved the clothing. We would dress up and channel Madonna and Debi Mazar—everyone tells me I remind them of Debi Mazar—so we would coordinate outfits. You wear the black Chanel with the silver hardware, and I’ll wear black Chanel with the gold hardware. I’ll wear all-gold jewelry, and you wear a silver dress and stuff. We were like Tweedledee and Tweedledum in the club.
Now, I dress conservatively during the day and get crazy at night. And my night look changes all the time. Last week it was Sheryl Crow when she had the loose denim pants. You need to have your thong out, do your hair curly-wavy. I style my friends all the time, too. I micromanage their outfits. They hate it, but it’s always turns into their best outfit! It's part of the brand for me, really. The Franziska Fox woman is indomitable, so it’s us, but it’s also a woman that’s really strong and confident—confident but comfortable. She’s not trying too hard, she’s just doing it. She throws it on, looks great, and gos. She’s definitely very busy, 24 hours a day—we don’t sleep! Everything is very spontaneous; Hey I just got invited here, do you want to go? Yeah! Ok, I’ll pick you up in 10.
For me, lipstick itself is an accessory. I like red, but I really have to be in the mood for it because it makes my lips look really big. I usually will match it with my outfit. I also love a good lip liner—I’m telling you, when I put on the lip liner, it just makes them look even better. I’ll do everything. I want big, big, big. Bigger is better, and there’s never enough—more to love.
So if the lipstick is on, the face is done unless you have a pimple or blemish here or there. I’ll cover it up really quick...though I will say, I’ll reapply lipstick throughout the night, but I’m not in the bathroom covering my acne at that point. I’m like, 'Who cares?' But other than that, it's lashes—eyelashes are major. I do have lash extensions. I got them when was 21 and have been getting them ever since. I’ve actually been telling everyone that they’re real. [Laughs] I get these reactions like, 'Wow, you were born that way? You majestic creature!' I need to get them redone. I go to Eyelure Boutique on Broadway. But really, it just saves so much time. You don't apply mascara or anything, and they never run—even if you're crying.
I also always wear blush. I use this Chanel Joues Contraste Powder Blush in 55 In Love. It has a little shimmer in it, too. I have a Nars palette with all kinds of blushes in it that I use, too.
My hair is always the same. It’s wavy, so I brush it with a round brush. I’m a brush fanatic. I hoard brushes. I love getting my hair brushed. I will ask my friends to brush my hair for me. All my ex-boyfriends would have to brush my hair. My favorite are Laight & Mercer. They’re really fancy, and there’s one for when you have wet hair and one for when you have dry hair. You shouldn’t brush your hair when it’s wet with a brush that’s meant for dry hair because it’ll rip it out. I’m really, really into the Laight & Mercer brushes.
I don’t have it here, but I go and buy the Sally Hansen Airbrush Legs Leg Makeup. Amazing. I do that a lot in the summer because my legs don’t tan as well as my arms and stuff. It’s actually amazing, it really doesn’t come off. I also use Jergens Natural Glow Revitalizing Daily Moisturizer. It darkens you if you keep doing it, which is why you have to be careful when putting it on. It’ll get stuck in the ridges of your fingers and feet and stain them, but it actually does work.
I can be out very, very late at night because I don’t require that much sleep. I like to end the night at Veselka. I usually have to eat pierogies, split pea soup, and orange juice—then I'm done. I get home to take my makeup off, but it's usually gone already.”
