'Eyeliner and fringe are my best friends in fashion,” the 20-year-old Russian Valery Kaufman says, sitting in our office without any bangs or makeup. It's no doubt in reference to her recent YSL campaign (which was also recreated for Dazed). “They always have to give me fake fringe. I should just buy one and start carrying it around with me at this point,”
While we would have loved to have clipped a piece on her right then and there, we didn't happen to have one handy. Luckily, Valery had brought along a whole slew of eye makeup with her, and was ready to play. “When I go out with my friends, they'll always say things like 'Valery, you've got to put way more makeup on or we're not going out with you.' So now I'm crazy about a smoky eye—it's all I can really do,” She rummaged around in her bag; favorites included Gucci Impact Long Wear Eye Pencil in Iconic Black and Chanel Illusion D'Ombre Long-Wear Luminous Eyeshadow in Fantasme. A demonstration followed.
'I try to keep it classic—always a cat eye and usually in black pencil because it's easier for me to control. Then if I'm going out, I like to play around with the Chanel because it's bright white and it contrasts really well with the black of the pencil,” Minimal steps; high impact. And easy enough for beginners, too! “I've only been playing around with makeup for about a year or so,” Valery said. “If I can do it myself, I absolutely will. I trust me the most—I know my face and I know what it needs,”
