If you were anything like me growing up, the soundtrack to the most formative years of your life was the Spice Girls. Not to make anyone feel old, but their debut single, “Wannabe ,' turned 18 this year, making the beloved girl power anthem a fully fledged adult. And while dating in 1996 may bear little to no resemblance to our Tinder-afflicted era, the Spice Girls were wise beyond their years. Let's revisit the major takeaways:
'If you want my future, forget my past / If you wanna get with me, better make it fast / Now don't go wasting my precious time / Get your act together, we could be just fine': These four lines of lyrical prose undoubtedly transcend the barriers of time. Take me for who I am (not who I used to be), be direct—I'm a busy woman! No bullshit allowed.
'If you wanna be my lover, you gotta get with my friends / Make it last forever, friendship never ends / If you wanna be my lover, you have got to give / Taking is too easy, but that's the way it is.”: After having spoken with many of my lady friends on this particularly standout stanza, I received a mixed bag of responses. Where most women don't really care what their friends think about their potential mates, some stand strong by continuing to put their sisters before any mister. But the one thing we can all agree on: If you want to be my lover, please don't also get with my friends.
'What do you think about that? Now you know how I feel / Say you can handle my love, are you for real? / I won't be hasty, I'll give you a try / If you really bug me then I'll say goodbye.”: Perhaps my favorite section of the song, the girls remind prospective mates that they, too, can pull the plug at any minute. No more Mr. Nice Spice, dudes.
