“I’ve wanted to be an actress since I was four. I have an acting mother. I grew up on film sets, and I did theater in school. I even did the whole dance situation. I’m just a ham for character and attention. [Laughs] But really, I think my passion is being on set, studying characters, and building a rapport with directors. As an actor, you want to bring what’s on paper to life in a really natural way, and that’s a challenge I die for.
I’m so thrilled to be a part of Ryan Murphy’s Love Story. I’m a sucker for romance, but the story combines the Kennedys with all of these other factors: New York, the ’90s, fashion. I have a great acting coach who helped me live in my role as Daryl Hannah. And my dialect coach helped me find Daryl’s voice, which is so unique to her and that time period—very breathy. I know there are people who won’t like my portrayal of Daryl. People love to have an opinion, but it is what it is. I have found it really interesting that some people—friends, even—have told me that they found the character annoying, but then they’d look her up and come back saying I portrayed her perfectly. That’s interesting to me because in no land do I find Daryl annoying. There are just many aspects of her that are so multidimensional.
BEAUTY
Vanity started early for me—I have a little scar from when I was a baby and I fell into a mirror. [Laughs] I really loved myself as a kid, but after having a baby, I have never loved myself more. Although, I wasn’t one of those pregnant people who thrives in pregnancy and feels like the hottest thing—I was walking around in my fiance’s jeans and giant sweaters. My eyebrows also bleached out completely and my eyelashes fell out. I did have a phase, maybe a month or two after I gave birth, where I was blessed with the most holy hair. I would wake up in the morning and be like, ‘Who gave me a blow out?’

SKINCARE
I had crazy cystic acne during COVID. My father passed away in December of 2019, and grief is a beast. If we try to internalize things, which I very much tried to do, it eventually comes out in our body. So I lost my dad and then the stress of COVID hit and all hell broke loose on my face. Of course, we couldn’t see facialists in person during the pandemic, but I called Biba de Sousa. She’s the founder of Biba Los Angeles and the facialist queen of acne. She had me use her zinc mask regularly, which helped a lot. But I also noticed that my skin started to clear up when I stopped picking my pimples, which is just so addictive. I still pick my fiancé’s pimples—is that gross?
More recently, I started taking Osmosis Beauty’s Skin Defense. It’s a supplement that’s supposed to help with hormonal and environmental ‘detoxing.’ I haven’t had one pimple since I started taking it. I take it at night along with these amazing hormonal herbs from my acupuncturist, Dr. Ellie Byun, which have completely cut out cramps from my periods. I also go to Dr. Ellie every two weeks for treatments. Then in the morning, I take a lypo-spheric vitamin C sachet.
My new obsession right now is face massage. I massage my lymph nodes to get everything moving and then I have a little massage routine that goes to my ears—everyone forgets the ears—and up through my hair to get my fascia. The best part is that face massages don’t have to be expensive. You can learn the points yourself. Joomee Song, this amazing facialist in LA who is heaven, does some lymphatic massage, too. I try to see her before big events. She’s expensive but worth it.

I don’t cleanse my face in the mornings. I just wet my face and use my red light mask. Then I use the PDRN glow spray cream and PDRN Hydro Moisturizer from Dr. Ellie’s line, Mimoh. I also have her V Sculptor, which is a micro-current contouring tool. And then I’m really into Counter’s All Bright vitamin c serum—it smells fresh—and Mountain Ocean’s Skin Trip moisturizer. I had a nanny named Karen growing up who was the most hilarious person on planet Earth. She was hired because she said she spoke Spanish, could cook, and was very clean. She was none of those things. But she became part of the family and was so incredible. She used Skin Trip and it now reminds me of her. It’s also just a good moisturizer that I’ve turned all of my friends to. I think there’s something weirdly charming about the bottle as well.
To be honest, I don’t always wear sunscreen—obviously, if it’s a really sunny day, I definitely have it on my face—but I’m good about wearing hats. Auteur’s Definitive Sun Drops are my favorite though. They don’t smell like SPF and the formula feels really hydrating. Every once in a while I’ll wear my daughter’s Badger sunscreen.
Body-wise, I love Naturium’s Glow Getter multi-oil body scrub. It’s like dessert for your body—it even smells like candy. When I wash it off, I feel like I don’t need to moisturize at all; my body is silky, silky smooth. It also goes a long way, which makes me happy because sometimes I get scrubs and I have to put the whole container in my hands to scrub my whole body.
MAKEUP
I don’t wear much makeup unless I have to look presentable somewhere, but I do use U Beauty’s Super Tinted Hydrator every day. It’s really moisturizing and gives you just enough color. And maybe it’s a trend, I don’t know, but I don’t mind having circles under my eyes. But if I need to conceal my rosacea, I’ll use Erborian’s CC Red Correct. That mostly happens right before my period and my skin is a little more sensitive and discolored—I don’t know if that’s a hormonal thing. Saie’s Slip Tint setting powder is heaven by the way. I’m usually not a powder girl—especially as I age I find that most powders just sit in my lines—but Saie’s dulls the shine without getting rid of the glow.

I like putting a little bit of the Merit blush—Rouge, Postmodern, and Après are my favorite shades—under my eyes, right where the sun hits me. I like using Fara Homidi’s Soft Glass lip gloss in Pomme by itself—it looks nice with my natural lip color. My tube is almost gone because my daughter uses it every day. She’ll say, ‘Mommy, you want lip gloss?’—she’s really my mirror and plays with all my makeup. And I just got into lip liner. M.ph’s Overliner in Cherry Cola is a little darker than my lips so it’s great on me—it emphasizes my lips in a really pretty way. Saie also has colors. I’ve been using them to fill in my lips a bit and then I’ll dab on lipstick. Chanel sends me so many, and they’re always the most divine colors. Merit just sent me their Lip Blush lipsticks, too. I’m obsessed with Bespoke, a perfect rose brown that’s not too brown.
I need eyeshadow for idiots because I don’t know how to do extreme shadow looks. I just take a brush, swoop it across the lid, and I’m done. Lucia Pica is a genius makeup artist who I love, and she made the incredible Bibliophilia palette for Byredo. All of the colors are just so good. My mission right now is to find a good gray-blue eyeshadow. You know, like that old millennial powder blue kind of product.
HAIR
I try not to shampoo my hair too much. I lean more into conditioning. But I really notice the difference in how my hair feels when I use Rōz’s Foundation shampoo and conditioner. Same with the K18 leave-in mask. When I first get my hair done, I’ll use it every four washes and then switch to once a month because I don’t want buildup.
I started dyeing my hair when I was 20 years old. I was on a shoot with photographer Alasdair McLellan and stylist Katie Grand for Russian Vogue. They told me they wanted to dye my hair, and I immediately said yes. I had a sort of mousy brown mixed with strawberry blonde, and everyone would always tell me I had the most stunning natural hair color and that I shouldn’t touch it. So I honestly wanted somebody to tell me I had to change my hair, and when Katie and Alasdair asked, I thought, Game on, let’s go.

I just have just these moments where I so badly want to venture from the pretty blonde girl. So I’ll dye my hair black or do the extreme and buzz my head, which I did once for a movie… followed by a very internal panic attack where I had to take a two and a half hour nap to calm down. [Laughs] There’s a part of me that wants to be really mysterious, but I like being blonde, maybe it’s something about my cheery demeanor. [Laughs] I have an incredible colorist in New York, Lena Ott, who has been doing my hair for a million years. She’s used to me coming in with the weirdest requests. Like, I’ll tell her, ‘I want English breakfast with a lot of milk’ or ‘I want to look like a Swedish baby.’ When we first met, she thought I was insane for a minute, but she went along with it. And honestly, every color is related to a feeling in some way. I would have tea with milk when I was in England, and it was a great memory so I would snap a photo for her to reference.
I don’t see Lena as often as I should. My hair grows so fast—my roots will start coming in literally two weeks after touching it up—and I’ve grown out of the stage of thinking roots are cool on me. I had to get it done every three weeks while I was filming Love Story, but it was also a lot more platinum then. I also got bangs to play Daryl. I hadn’t had bangs since I was six and my mom cut them for me—but believe me, once a year or so I’ll think about getting bangs, usually when I’m going through something. [Laughs] Bangs are Daryl’s thing, and I think they really helped me get into character. When I have bangs as Dree, I don’t know how to style or blow dry my hair. I either end up with bangs sticking straight down or styled like an ’80s ice skater.”
