Into The Gloss

“I’ve been making beauty and fashion YouTube videos since I was 13. At some point, that love of beauty and fashion turned into a massive dream of starting my own brand, but I held on to that desire in secret. Even before YouTube—back when I went by ‘Beyond Beauty Star’ because no one shared their real names online—I was hand-pouring soap bars to sell to my classmates. I’d bring them to school in a binder with a laminated menu explaining each soap. With Cyklar, I’ve come full circle.

There was never a doubt in my mind that I’d create a body care line. Applying something like a body oil is the fastest and easiest way to feel like I’m centering myself again. Especially as someone who grew up as a massive people-pleaser and as someone who was always mindful of the temperature and energy in a room, I eventually realized I had to take care of myself first in order to show up as a good friend, girlfriend, daughter, and creator. That cycle of care inspired the name. Beyond that, I wanted to make products with both efficacious, science-driven formulas—like vitamin C—and fragrances that are mood-lifting and beautiful.

SKINCARE
I’m prone to rosacea, so I have to be mindful of what I use, but otherwise I have pretty normal skin. In the morning, I just splash with water, but at night I love Prequel’s cleansers. If I’ve worn makeup or sweat a lot, I’ll double cleanse with the Pre-Gleanse oil before following it up with the Gleanser. For the past six months, I’ve also been using the CurrentBody LED mask and I’ve noticed a big difference—my skin looks more even and plump.

I wear Skinceuticals C E Ferulic during the day. At night, I recently swapped retinol for Biologique Recherche P50 PIGM 400, which exfoliates gently without stripping. Then I’ll apply their Serum Progeskin, followed by Dieux Deliverance—it’s so hydrating and perfect any time of day.

Aestura’s Atobarrier 365 cream is a new favorite. I’d seen it everywhere online, finally tried it, and now I’m on my third bottle. It might feel weird at first because you see these little beads, but they melt as you blend the cream into your face. If I want more moisture before bed, I’ll use Augustinus Bader’s Rich Cream. And for eyes, I love Dieux’s cream because it’s light and never cakey.

SPF is non-negotiable and Beauty of Joseon’s Relief Sun Aqua Fresh is unbeatable. Meanwhile Prequel makes great SPF lip balms. They have a tinted version that’s just gorgeous, but the original clear one is just as minty and fresh. I keep mine by my front door so I never forget before an errand or a dog walk.

BODY
I’m a big believer in lymphatic drainage. I dry brush with one from Kitsch, I run it from the bottom of my feet to my legs and then towards my heart. It feels invigorating, but I also love how soft my skin feels after. In the shower, I of course use a Cyklar body wash. Right now it’s Bergamot Bond. It’s fresh and citrusy—especially perfect in the morning. If I need to exfoliate, I grab our glycolic acid exfoliating spray when I step out of the shower. Pro-tip: Spray it on the bottom of your feet to help with cracked heels. You could even use it on your scalp if you wanted, or it’s also great at preventing ingrown hairs—just use it either the day before or after you shave.

For a targeted treatment, I like Shani Darden’s Body Reform serum. It’s a retinoid so I use it on specific areas like my hips, where I have stretch marks, and my knees because I think they tend to age quite quickly. It’s also great on my hands and chest. That’s always a night product since it makes you sensitive to the sun. For hydration, I’ve been loving our Sacred Santal body cream. But if I’m going out, I’ve been applying the Vanilla Verve body oil on my legs for some extra shine. It has vitamin C to help brighten your skin. Just layer SPF if you’re wearing it during the day—I like EltaMD’s body formula.

On indulgent self-care nights—usually after an everything shower—I’ll pull out my Higherdose PEMF mat, put my feet up, and use the Cyklar body contour tool with body oil. The mat helps stimulate recovery, but honestly, I notice it most when I skip it. I often set it to level four to help me wake up, or I’ll sit on it while I answer emails, edit videos, or journal.

MAKEUP
I had eyebrow blindness for so long. My brows were literally triangles in so many of my old YouTube videos, but at the time, I thought I looked so good. Now I’m all about a soft feathered look. Make makes my favorite brow pencil right now—it’s really easy to make soft individual strokes with it. I use Warm Brown, and I set it with the brow gel from Skin by Ella.

I usually stop after doing my brows on weekdays, but even outside of that I keep it pretty light. On more makeup-y days I like to start off with cream bronzers and blushes and underpaint in the Mary Phillips way. I place Saie’s Dew Bronze in Sand at the top of my forehead, my cheekbones, my jawline and the creases of my eye to create depth. I’ll jump to blush next. I’ve been loving Rhode’s in Piggy and Summer Fridays’ in Soft Strawberry—I love mixing them together.

For coverage, I love Armani’s Luminous Silk foundation in 4 so much. I only place it in the areas where I didn’t place bronzer or blush and blend it with a brush or my fingers. Concealer-wise, I use Make’s in Light C. It looks very skin-like and it’s so blendable. Sometimes I’ll skip foundation entirely and just use concealer. I set everything with the Laura Mercier translucent powder. I think the days of putting it all over my face are behind me—it’s just nice to see some of the moisture from all of the skincare and cream products I use—but I certainly always place it under my eyes, T-Zone, and around my nostrils and chin with a puff, and diffuse it with a large brush. If I made the mistake of adding too much powder, I grab my Glow Stick from Chanel—the transparent one—and tap it on my cheeks, the bridge of my nose, my Cupid’s Bow, and even my brow bones to bring life back to my face. It’s such a great product. You can put it everywhere—I even love using it on the center of my lips.

If I want a little something extra on my eyelids, Ilia’s eye stylus in Venetian is my go-to. It has this really pretty soft pink pearl iridescence that looks very multidimensional. It’s so fun to blend with my fingers. Then it’s time for mascara. I love brown ones. They’re a little easier and softer, especially during the day. Ilia’s Limitless is amazing.

Lining my lips is important to me. I feel like it really cleans up and polishes a look—sometimes it’s the only other thing I do if I’m just doing my brows. I especially gravitate to those that match my natural lip color. You just can’t beat Make Up For Ever’s in Wherever Walnut and Anywhere Caffeine—they’re my favorite shades, especially topped with the Summer Fridays Lip Butter in Pink Sugar.

HAIR
My hair has been all sorts of colors that I’ve done myself: purple, black, ombré, you name it. I went blonde professionally for the first time with Matt Rez almost two years ago. He’s so talented and I loved what he did so I kept highlighting it for two years. But I think we all have an idea in our head of what our final form is, and ultimately, I really see myself as a brunette—I’m happy to be back to my natural state.

There are a couple of products that have saved me through all of my bleachings: the K18 leave-in hair mask—I replace my conditioner with it once a week—and the Epres Bond Repair treatment. It comes in a little vial that you pour into a continuous mister with water. You actually use it on dry hair before stepping into the shower. I try to wash my hair twice a week, but if I have a video or photo shoot with a lot of hairspray, I’ll wash my hair regardless. I use Epres’ Healthy Hair shampoo and conditioner. They’re just hydrating and simple. Once a week, I use K18’s clarifying shampoo. It felt more important when I had blonde hair, but LA has pretty harsh water so this helps. Then out of the shower, Pureology Color Fanatic leave-in is the first product that I’m spraying in my hair. The bottle promises it has 21 benefits, and I find that it really is multi-tasking: It’s a heat protectant, a detangler, and a moisturizer. In between washes, I rely on Anablue’s hair serum to bring my hair back to life. It’s not as heavy as an oil but it feels luxurious. And Crown Affair makes my favorite dry shampoo. I love that it comes as a powder with a brush. It smells beautiful, too.

NAILS
I recently started going to Jenny for manicures. I found her on Instagram and fell in love with her stunning work. But I like to do my own nails, too. I taught myself how to do gel extensions and fills during the 2020 lockdown, and it quickly became a passion of mine. Life comes and goes in seasons. I had short nails for a very long time because I got really into indoor rock climbing. I’m temporarily done with that because sometimes a girl needs nails. [Laughs] I love having a fresh set when I’m filming videos or taking photos. They just make me feel good—I think I literally move and talk differently.

FRAGRANCE
Scents are obviously an important part of Cyklar, but when I thought about creating standalone fragrances, I wanted them to be perfume oils so they could align with the message of getting in touch with your body. It’s such a tactical and intimate format that really encourages you to massage the oil into your skin—I love rolling them on my neck and chest but also behind my knees and the crooks of my elbows. But on a practical level, they last longer on your skin and they’re easy to throw in a purse.

Picking just one or two of my Cyklar perfume oils feels like picking a favorite child, but I will admit that I wear Cedar Supreme and Sacred Santal the most. Sacred Santal is amazing during the day, and Cedar Supreme is great at night. It was important to me that they could stand alone but also be able to work well together so people can mix and match them to create a custom fragrance. The cedar and santal combo is elite, but I also love Flora Veil with Vanilla Verve.

WELLNESS
I kept hearing how important weight lifting is for bone density as you age, so I started mixing in strength training with at-home Pilates. I’ve also gotten into pickleball. I’m super competitive with myself, and it’s so satisfying to see improvement every time I play. Honestly, I think there’s something special about trying things you’re terrible at and discovering how quickly you can pick them up.

We’re lucky enough to have both a sauna and a cold-plunge at home. There’s no real schedule to when I use them, but my boyfriend hops in way more often than I do, which usually motivates me to join him. In the end though, walking and hiking are my main ways of moving my body. As a dog owner, I’m out multiple times a day. Everyone thinks of Runyon Canyon, but I love Griffith Park—it’s massive. You can hike up to the Observatory, and there’s a spot called Cedar Grove that’s so cute. The trees there make me feel like I’m in Twilight.”
