Into The Gloss

“Lately, I’ve been drawn to projects that make people laugh. My new movie, Deep Cover, is a British comedy about improv actors who accidentally find themselves going undercover. The main tenet of improv is to say, ‘Yes, and,’ so they keep getting in trouble. I loved getting to make a comedy that is ultimately about being present, listening, and staying playful. In a world that’s constantly overwhelmed by anxiety and stress, seeking out moments to laugh with others feels like an essential daily ritual.

BEAUTY
I was 11 when I first remember being aware of beauty. I was in Japan watching Nicole Kidman get her makeup done for a press event for one of my dad’s movies. I loved—and still love—Nicole. The makeup artist used an eyelash curler on her, and I was so confused and worried it might hurt her. I remember it so vividly, this contraption moving toward the eyeball of the most perfect woman I’d ever seen. But she seemed calm, and because she was calm, I was too. [Laughs]

SKINCARE
I’ve had good luck with my skin for most of my life. I had a short stint of cystic acne as a teenager, and again in my early twenties, but aside from that, it’s been pretty smooth sailing. My skincare routine is very low-maintenance, but it’s also all over the place—the complete opposite of consistent. I’m not the best example to follow, except for the fact that I’m extremely diligent about sunscreen and staying in the shade. [Laughs]

I use EltaMD’s SPF 40 sunscreen—it’s super moisturizing, and I genuinely don’t feel ready without it. But it took a long time to get me there. Sunscreen used to be a total sensory issue for me. I just couldn’t deal with the texture—so many of them give me the shivers. I also love Supergoop!’s Glow Stick, which I keep in my purse to reapply throughout the day. You don’t have to get your hands all oily; it’s like dabbing on highlighter.

At night, I always double cleanse. I’ve been using Benefit’s POREfessional foaming cleanser and cleansing oil for a while now, and they’re great for travel too. If I’m wearing eye makeup, I’ll start with Bioderma micellar water to break it down. Then in the morning, I’ll just use a Clean Skin Club towelette with water. Easy.

Sonia Roselli’s products are a dream—they’re all so moisturizing, which is always what I’m looking for. Her Water Balm moisturizer is amazing under makeup, and I always find myself restocking her Water Oil Skin Prep. Meanwhile I pile Skin Food on like a mask. Sometimes I’ll even use it on my lips—especially after a lip stain. I’ll apply one— my favorite is Lovely, a chestnut brown from Wonderskin—let it dry so I can peel it off, and then put on the Skin Food to counteract any dryness.

Retrouvé's eye concentrate lasts forever—I just use the tiniest dot—which is helpful because it’s very pricey. I honestly feel guilty recommending it. I remember showing it to my makeup artist, Sonia Roselli, and she started yelling, “What the fuck?” in Italian. [Laughs] But at this age and stage in my life, it’s great. I’d never even used an eye cream until Terry Lawton, a facialist in LA, introduced me to it. I immediately loved the texture.

I love using my Ziip Halo before getting my makeup done for work. If I’m being driven to set, I tell the driver, ‘Don’t mind me, I’m just ironing my face.’ [Laughs] I used it every day while filming Deep Cover, and it really brought my face to life. I noticed a big improvement in the smoothness of my skin’s texture, too.

MAKEUP
These days, I feel like I exclusively do my makeup either in the car or in the two minutes before a Zoom call, and I hate lugging stuff around. So it was kind of perfect when I was on a flight and overheard a woman behind me telling her seatmate about her beauty company. One of the things she copped to was that she’s often running a little late and always ends up doing her makeup in the car—so she created a portable, stackable makeup system to make that easier.

Right after, Instagram started targeting me with ads for her company, Subtl Beauty. How Instagram knew we were sitting near each other I’ll never know; if it hadn’t made my life so much more convenient, I might be mad. [Laughs] I ended up reaching out to Rachel Reid, the founder, who sweetly sent me products to try. I’ve bought from the brand over and over since—the products are beautiful and genuinely innovative. I pretty much do my entire face with their stack now, including their 3-in-1 Brow BFF in Auburn.

If I need a proper foundation, I use a combo—Erborian CC Red Correct and RMS ReEvolve Foundation. Actor Sissy Spacek and Vivian both underpaint and then go in with a light layer of foundation, so I do the same—I can be a little heavier-handed with bronzer, blush, or whatever, and know it’ll all get softened once I blend foundation over top. And then when I need mascara, I reach for my tube of Hourglass Unlocked.

I love Appledoll’s Nectar Salve and Kiss lipstick. The brand—whose whole vibe is goth in the best way—is based in Los Angeles and has a beautiful storefront on Abbot Kinney. The lipstick is super moisturizing. It looks matte but feels creamy, and it really stays on—not in a way that leaves a harsh line, but more like melting into your lips. The pigment is incredibly rich and beautiful. The Nectar is my favorite lip balm, but I also use it on my cheeks as a highlighter. Their mascara is great too—it’s called Tarantula, which is really fun.

NAILS + FRAGRANCE
I love well-manicured nails, but I don’t always have the time to go to the salon, especially when I’m on the road. Olive & June’s Poppy is so great for that reason. I found it during the pandemic, and it allows you to paint your nails with your non-dominant hand—a game-changer.

For fragrances, I’m always on the hunt for ones without synthetic ingredients—mostly to avoid triggering my mom’s allergies. Instagram started serving me ads for Esas Beauty, so I ordered one of their perfumes and quickly went back for their Hamam deo spray. I use it as deodorant, but it also smells amazing—like vanilla—so it’s kind of a two-fer. However, Serge Lutens Fleurs d'Oranger is my all-time favorite perfume—it’s got orange blossom, jasmine of Egypt, and white rose. In general, I love gourmand scents with edible notes like chocolate and vanilla. I usually struggle with a weak sense of smell, but with gourmands, I don’t struggle as much .

HAIR
Adir Abergel, who’s an amazing, amazing hairdresser, did a collaboration with Lelet. The collection included a metallic O pin that I love so much. I have really long hair, but it’s so easy to keep it up with the pin. Overall I don’t really do much to my hair. Every once in a while, especially when I’m working and I have the discipline, I’ll use a shampoo like the Davines Alchemic that’s specifically made for copper hair. And then I love R+Co’s Badlands dry shampoo paste.

What I’m really passionate about is my Sheila Stotts brush. It powers through tangles so easily. My hair can get frizzy, but when I use my brush with a Shark hair dryer, it ends up very, very smooth. It’s amazing. By the way, the Shark dryer is amazing, too. I was doing press in Toronto and I worked with a hairstylist named Janet Jackson—for real—and she actually gave it to me. It’s perfect for traveling because it’s so compact. My daughter steals it all of the time.”
