Lipstick while dating can be tough—particularly around Valentine's Day, a holiday that begs for bright red lip color. But that other thing February 14th calls for (kissing) can get problematic, depending on how cool your partner is with getting some makeup transference throughout the night. Long-wear, no-stain lipstick is obviously the dream, though the only real way to guarantee lofty claims is by trial and error. Lucky for everyone, five couples have pu t four long-wearing lipstick to the test and reported back (with selfies) on their real life staying power. They also told us their V-Day plans, because that's what's really important here. XO, ITG.
HAILEY CLAUSON AND JULLIEN HERRERA
'I have been modeling since I was 13. Most recently I was featured in the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition 2015. My boyfriend is also a model and we met through mutual friends. We were best friends for two years before we officially started dating, and now we're going on almost three years together. For Valentine's Day, I’m going to make him dinner and we'll spend the night in.
I like a natural look, but will wear a red lip out every few weeks to change it up. I'm wearing MAC Pro Longwear Lip Creme in Good To Go. I've tried to see what lipstick looks like on Jullien, but...he was hesitant, to say the least.” —Hailey Clauson
RAQUEL BERRIOS AND LUIS ALFREDO DEL VALLE
'We were both born and raised in Puerto Rico but actually met here in New York at a friend's house. I was playing guitar covers of Lady Gaga in Spanish with my girlfriends and I guess I impressed Luis, who had just moved here. Now we're in a band together called Buscabulla, which means 'troublemaker' in Spanish. We've been together for four years now—now every day is Valentine's Day.
I wear a lot of bright shades on my lips—oranges, reds, things like that. It gets messy! Today I'm wearing Hourglass Opaque Rouge Liquid Lipstick in Raven, and it's lasted.” —Raquel Berrios
ALEXANDRA AGOSTON AND CHRIS COLLS
'I'm a model and Chris is a photographer. We fell in love on set...and the rest of the two years that we've been together is history. This year for Valentine's Day we just plan on being with each other—going out for oysters at Marlows & Sons to celebrate low key.
We kiss all the time when I've got lipstick on! I'm wearing Lorac Lip Luxe 8 Hour Lip Color in Coral, which surprisingly doesn't last long! But the kissing leaves a perfect love-bitten stain...” —Alexandra Agoston
ERIN CULLISON AND SCOTT LIPPS
'I'm a fashion publicist at BPCM, and my boyfriend is the president of One Management—he's also Courtney Love's drummer. We just celebrated our three-year anniversary last month, and we were lucky enough to be in Thailand for that. Before it all, we met at one of my work events at Milk Studios. Our first date was three months later. This year, we'll both be working on Valentine's Day because of Fashion Week, so we won't really get to do much alone. I can say though, we are looking forward to our post-fashion-month getaway to Turks & Caicos.
I go through phases of wearing lipstick, but when I do, it's usually some variation of a bold, bright red shade. So in this case, I always opt for kisses on my cheek...at least in the beginning of the night! I'm wearing one of the Hourglass liquid lipsticks in Icon, a true red.”—Erin Cullison
LIZ DE LA PIEDRA AND JOSH YOUNG
'I'm a photographer and a new mama, and my husband is a producer in Flosstradamus—also a new daddy. We've been together for five years. It's a typical love story—we met on Myspace. I love lipstick, and I wear it every day. I'm wearing one of the Rimmel Provocalips 16HR Kissproof Lip Color in Heartbreaker. Josh loves how it looks, especially when it's a matte that doesn't move and can't stain him. When I first put it on, I'm usually like 'Don't mess Mami's makeup,' but it's definitely all kissed off by the end of the night. I always make sure to wipe Josh's face though.
We have a tradition every Valentine's Day in which Josh gets me a new Chanel lipstick, and in turn, I get Josh a nice pair of boxers. They're both things we can wear at night and enjoy on one another. I want to be an old lady with a million Chanel lipsticks that I can wear anytime and remember kissing my husband throughout the years.”—Liz De La Piedra
