'I’m Ryen Staggers [@ry.en] and I’m currently a journalism student at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. I’m also working on a script. I very much like to think of myself as an artist—good vibes get my creativity flowing! That's always applied to my makeup, too, but being a college student constricts my time. I need my products to be just as on-the-go as I am. Unless I’m going out, I don’t want to spend any more than 10 minutes getting ready.

SKINCARE

I used to have terrible eczema. I would spend weeks with dry skin, broken out in hives. One summer, I discovered St. Ives Apricot Scrub and I swear it cleared my skin completely. Now I switch between the Dr. Bronner’s Peppermint or black soap that I get from the farmers’ market. If I have a ton makeup on, I’ll use Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Cleanser. I’ll exfoliate with a homemade sugar scrub, maybe once a week. I like to tone my skin with witch hazel and then spritz rose water on my face to bring balance. I usually moisturize with Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Moisturizer in the morning and raw shea butter at night.

MAKEUP

For the most part, I wear makeup every day. I love foundation! I love the texture, I love the application process. My very first was MAC Face and Body Foundation in C7. I still love it but recently I’ve been using Shea Moisture’s Wet/Dry Powder in Madidi Mocha. For a while I was using MAC’s Studio Fix Fluid Foundation in NW43. I love the color but the texture is sometimes too much for everyday wear. When I look for foundations and concealers, I look to see if they will compliment both the red and yellow tones I have in my skin. For concealer, I like MAC Pro Longwear Concealer in NC45 but if I’m feeling lazy, I’ll skip it. For blush, I prefer colors in the red family— MAC's Format or Love Joy are good.

But if I’m not in the mood for foundation, I’ll still take the time to put on my eyebrows. For that, I use a basic angled brush and any brown gel eyeliner I have on hand.

HAIR

This honestly has to be the most interesting part of my routine. My grandmother started taking me to the salon as a little girl and it's always stuck with me as something important to do. Plus, I’m so relaxed with my makeup routine that I need to bring out the big guns when it comes to my hair. I recently went from brown to ginger blond and I’m surprised to say that it’s a lot more low maintenance than I thought. Every day, I wash with Suave Conditioner because it’s cheap and it works. I have to be careful when I wash my hair, because if I don't use the right products, it'll go everywhere. I get a quick trim about every week and a half, so that’s when I’ll use As I Am Coconut Co-Wash Cleansing Conditioner. I like to switch between As I Am Curling Gel and their Smoothing Gel because they both maintain my curls’ shape and don’t make them crunch. Right now I’m actually thinking about growing my hair out at the top a little bit, I just haven’t exactly committed to the idea.

HEALTH

Everyone should consider kombucha. I’m transitioning to a more vegetarian diet and plan to eventually become a vegan. I can honestly credit kombucha as the answer to good health, and it’s also been helpful in my transition. I drink it almost every day. When I don’t drink it, I can honestly feel the difference. It’s like my beauty potion in a bottle.”
