'Going out is very much a part of my job these days—almost every night of the week I'm either at the Jane Hotel or The Westway hanging out in the lobby, checking the guest list, and hanging out. I don't think I could work at just any club—but at The Jane, I work with two of my best friends, so it's a lot of fun. And none of us really party hard—we keep it classy and professional most nights. What's good about it is that it forces me to be more social and meet more people than I otherwise would. If I wasn't working, I'd probably stay in most nights and watch movies because my days are so hectic with creating Obesity & Speed, my clothing line. I've been doing that for about 14 years and it's grown bigger and more successful than I ever imagined. But I'm ready for something new, so the Spring 2015 collection will be my last. But right now, I'm still running around, doing a million things for it, then going out after that. But I love everything I do, definitely.
GETTING READY
I have the same getting-ready ritual every night, unless I'm going a big event. But what I do is so clearly different from what the girls coming to the club will do. You can just tell. Instead of getting amped up, I like to take some time to calm down first. I'll get home from a busy day, make some coffee or yerba mate tea and jump in the shower. I've been using this Giovanni Eco Chic Shampoo and Conditioner, which I'm really loving. Then I'll wash my face with the Kate Somerville Detox Daily Cleanser. After I'm out, I moisturize with Kate Sommerville Daily Deflector Moisturizer.
Music is a big part of my routine—what I listen to changes all the time, so I make all these playlists on Spotify. I'll start playing something and light some incense from John Derian. He is this amazing guy and has three stores now with housewares and Americana mixed with Japanese inspiration. I just got back from Joshua Tree and picked up some palo santo wood, too. The smell is just calming and beautiful. For dinner, I'll order vegetables, brown rice, and the most amazing miso soup or extra spicy hot and sour soup from Wild Ginger—it's perfect if I'm not feeling 100 percent. Or I'll cook something healthy and vegan.
It depends on what I'm doing that night, but I'll occasionally go out with friends before work, especially if I'm in a dressed-up kind of mood. Then I'll walk to the Jane—it's about 45 minutes and a really good way to clear my mind.
MAKEUP
Bobbi Brown foundation is the best. I have two different formulas in the same shade depending on where I am. Most of the time, I wear the Long-Wear Even Finish Foundation, but if I go to LA, I wear her regular foundation because it's a lot lighter. It also depends on how much coverage I need. Her eye shadows are really good also—I've been using Toast for forever. I do a pretty neutral taupe or brown eye and then swipe some Diorshow on my lashes. Pretty simple.
My skin tends to be kind of dry, so under my eyes I use Benefit Fake-Up, which is their concealer that also helps with wrinkles. It's just really great—it looks like a lipstick tube, but the lipstick is just essentially a moisture stick, so you put it on and it moisturizes underneath your eyes.
For a long time, I had a lip ring and thought I could never wear lipstick, but in the past couple of years I've grown to really love it. But I'm super specific about shade—I feel like a lot of people wear colors that are too harsh. I watched a lot of my makeup artist friends play around with layering colors, so that's what I do to get something that's pretty natural yet still noticeable. I mix two Nars Satin Lip Pencils together— Het Loo and Golshan—for this really perfect '90s red. If I want something pinker, I use a Make Up Forever Lipliner Pencil and Givenchy Le Rouge Lipstick on top in Rose Dentelle. It all depends on what I'm wearing—I prefer the red lip with a monochrome outfit because it'll stand out more.
AFTER THE PARTY
I get home anywhere from midnight to 4am and I immediately take off my makeup. I'm obsessed with my Neutrogena Cleansing Towelettes, which aren't harsh on your skin—just a good nighttime cleansing wipe that's easy to use. I actually carry them around all day—that's how much I love them.
I try to remember to use things like the Kiehl's Line-Reducing Eye-Brightening Concentrate or Clinique All About Eyes Rich. They're really good, but when it's late I tend to forget them. Sometimes I use the Kiehl's Rare Earth Deep Pore Cleansing Masque. I don't do it on purpose, but I'll actually end up sleeping in it. I only ever sleep for about four hours a night, so I guess it's not too bad.”
