Why the neon? “I love how, with very little makeup—and effort—you can create a look that catches instant attention without being overbearing,” he says. “It’s fun to play around and place the lines differently than you would a [more muted] eyeliner.” You’re left with somethig unbelievably refreshing in its simplicity. ”Since the colors are very saturated and the look is graphic, in terms of makeup, you won’t need much else.” For that natural, clean skin (and to help the neon really stand out), he used a bit of Rodin Olio Lusso and some Glossier Perfecting Skin Tint.

If you’re unsure about neon for your everyday, Sil understands—but he has some tips for transposing the examples here into something you feel like you can actually wear. First, he advises that you simply let the looks inspire you. “The silver slashes work great with her earrings—like jewelry for the eyes.” Of the yellow line across the eyes, he says, “I love how it’s really bold, but delicate at the same time. The pink, graphic neon is beautiful in combination with that Yves Klein blue cashmere sweater, and the neon orange eyeliner on Frances’ bare face with the white shirt and skinny tie reminds me of something Annie Lenox would wear in her Eurythmics days.” Play around and you might end up with something you really love. Even if it’s unexpected.

Chances are you’re not a makeup artist and like most mere humans, struggle to get that line just right. “A helpful trick is to use a credit card on the "flat" planes of the face” Sil says. “...you dip the thin side of the credit card in the desired color cream liner and just roll it from the side of the temples up to the corner [of the] eye. Same for the other side of the face.” He adds that you can finish the line off with a thin brush until it’s exactly perfect.

None of the looks here will take very long to do, even on yourself at home. You’ll just need one thing, and that’s an eyeliner. If liquids are your preferred medium, Sil recommends brands like Make Up For Ever, Fenty Beauty, YSL, Dior, MAC, Covergirl and Kryolan for their “really saturated and bright” liquid eyeliners.

If you're impartial, cream liners can be great for these looks, too. With a “slanted eyeliner brush” such as MAC 210 Precise Eyeliner Brush, Sil suggests any one of the following for that bold neon line: Kryolan HD Cream Liner, MAC Chromaline, Kryolan Aquacolor UV Dayglow, Make Up For Ever Aqua XL Colorpaint, or Inglot AMC Eyeliner Gel.

And lastly, from Tom: "I liked this shoot because it feels like an amalgamation of the beauty trends we've seen for the past few years—restraint, not adding a lip, not adding a cheek, tying yourself down to looking fresh and bare...but then adding a wink of makeup somewhere. It's subtle, but bold at the same time. A lot of Sil's work is like that. Which is why he was perfect."
