While the internet at large suggests that turtlenecks can't shake their nerdy roots (Steve Jobs and Peggy Olson, you wear them well), if brainy is the new sexy, doesn't that make the classic sweater the new lingerie?

There certainly are options on the slinkier side of things—take the sleek, stretchy, often black style that's suitable for layering, elongating, or showing some shape with the allusion of conservatism. Then there's the chunky, in-your-face, oversized variety that, when worn with a razor-thin trouser or mini, is mysteriously slimming. Below, a mix of both, all of which will soften the blow of emerging from under a down comforter.

1. Edith A. Miller Metallic Stripe Crop Turtleneck: This classic made-in-America option comes in an understated stripe, perfect for pairing with high-waisted skirts or layering under sleeveless dresses.

2. J.W. Anderson Gathered Turtleneck: A basic with a twist is exactly what's required to conquer transitional weather. Here, a zippered ruffle is a modern replacement for the traditional fold-over neckline, and its shell silhouette is an easy addition to whatever you're already wearing.

3. Joe Fresh Turtleneck: Down for a foolproof sweater? Its cocoon-y shoulders exude comfort, and in speckled material, there's no way you'll ever look linty. Even if you are.

4. Wilfred Durandal Sweater: Mix a slouchy fit with deep side slits for a winning combo that's built for transitioning from day to night (or vice versa).

5. Reiss Toria Roll Neck Jumper: The vertical stripe is few and far between. The fact that this turtleneck borrows pinstripe-style detailing from a suit makes it particularly uncommon. Casual Friday, but with that business school swagger.
