Are You Afraid of the Dark?

At some point phones went from wireless, to mobile, to "cell," which might not be an analogy to their size (we're not at Zoolander level...yet), but they can now at least comfortably fit into the palms of our hands, the pockets of our jeans, and frequently get lost in the bottom of our bags. So while we wait for the next iteration of our beloved iPhones to grace the market (rumor is September), let’s take this chance to be thankful that our phones really are now mobile—not monstrous, inconvenient, clunky pieces of plastic.

Cool post. My mom and dad both had these large cell phones back in the day.

  • Maggie

Christian Bale can call me on that big clunky cell phone any time he wants!

I remember thinking it was so cool to have a phone with a screen that was BLUE (not color...just lit up blue background) when I was in college! Thank GOD phone cameras were non-existent (or terrible) back then...oh, the trouble I would be in now if there were pics of the things I did in college on the internet!

I'm excited for the day when the politicians campaigning for public office have to face the reality of Facebook and Instagram pictures of their youths.

In fact some of today's android phones are beginning to look comically large to me. The screens are large, but they no longer fit in the user's pocket, and look sort of ridiculous!

I think you have a year error....Nikki didn't have a Nokia contract in the 80s, and the phones certainly didn't look like that. Maybe 1998 but not 1988.

This boy I had a crush on in middle school used to call me "big phone" because I was always the last in my class to get the new generation of cell phones.

    • ITGElizabeth

      Hey Big Phone. What's up?

  • fourtinefork

The Ferris Bueller picture is just a cordless phone, right? Not a cell phone?

  • Hai Yen Nguyen

No Julia Roberts in My Best Friend's Wedding?! Great list though, looking at clunky, outdated technology always makes me laugh.

  • Lavinka

This is hilarious!!! I laughed so hard.

  • Jane Tippett

remember the bag "mobile" phones - cray

  • murt

American Psycho was set in the late '80s though! Cell phones were not that huge in 2000 haha!

  • ModernGrace

Ha, this cracks me up. My aunt had a giant car phone with a case.
