And now, a moment for bare skin. Specifically, the foundation-free faces, no-mascara eyes, and unglossed lips in these pics. We're so used to seeing actresses, musicians, and models in HD-adjusted red carpet makeup that it's easy to forget they're (extremely pretty) actual human beings who have cute freckles and normal eyebrows. Makeup is a great tool for self-expression, but it's important to remember that it's not—or shouldn't be, at least—what defines you. So this week, we're celebrating women who've voluntarily stepped in front of the camera au naturel for a "Stars Without Makeup" magazine shoot, from Beyoncé and Cindy Crawford to Monica Bellucci and Claire Danes. 29 women making the case for good skincare, right this way...

I'm personally a huge fan of freckles. They give a sort of sun-kissed, youthful effect and should be shown off more often!

Gorgeous slideshow. While these photos are without makeup...are they without digital touch-ups as well?

    • ITGLacey

Definitely for all the images from French Elle (the Stars Sans Fards photos/black & white shots). They actually advertise that there's no makeup & no retouching, which is pretty cool.

Images from People's Stars Without Makeup shoots say that celebrities "took it all off—their makeup, that is—for the cameras," but they don't explicitly state that there was no Photoshop, although people like Zooey Deschanel & Demi Lovato don't look retouched, which is why I included them!

Lighting is everything, but those two photos are pretty great!

  • Melissa Hurley

These women are even more beautiful without makeup!

  • dmh

Some of these women clearly do have mascara or eyeliner on, but for the ones that don't - kudos!

  • Mademoiselle nature

Loving Amber Valleta, really pretty! vive le au naturel!

wow some of these girl look the same, so natural and pretty, other looks different without makeup

  • Caroline

Stars Sans Fards is now my new favorite sentence to say (whatever it means)

    • Guest

Stars without makeup :) And just fyi, you don't pronounce the d in 'fards'!

  • ITGLacey

Yeah, I wondered about that too, & decided to keep the photo in because maybe she just dyes her lashes/has extensions. These are all taken from shoots that explicitly said the women involved were completely makeup free—we didn't use images that just "looked" barefaced to us or anything—so we're trusting People/Elle/Marie Claire here :)

    • Aubrey Green

Could be the lighting and sun that is 'helping' her out...? Isn't it all about the lighting...something like that right?

      • ITGLacey

True—& as someone who's had lash extensions for years, if Craig McDean showed up tomorrow & took pictures of me bare faced, I'd still look like I had a mascara & liner on.

  • Lauren

Photos of beautiful celebrities without make-up always makes me feel like everything is going to be okay, and it reminds me to be less hard on myself for looking tired, hormonal, human, etc.

Have never heard of Shalom Harlow, what beautifully refined yet strong features. Claire Danes looks radiant.

Hmm. The problem with labelling these women as 'makeup-free' is that it encourages even more unattainable standards for women. Now these women are presented seemingly 'without tricks/makeup' are the goals for the average women WITHOUT makeup.
Amber Valletta has eyeshadow on, unless she has discolored skin even past her eyelid.
Eva Mendes has brown eyeshadow on, unless she has incredibly dark eyelids.
Beyonce looks like she has foundation on, and a lipgloss that is lighter than her lip color, as well as brow product.
Eva Herzigova looks like she has mascara on. That blackness above her eyes cannot be natural.
    Jessica Pare looks completely bare.
Cindy Crawford , Claudia Schiffer, Morena, Helena, Kristen, and Jordana look bare save for tricks like dramatic lighting and tightlining with eyeliner.
    Monica has eyeliner on.
    Amanda looks bare.
Angie looks like she has dark eyeshadow on, or discolored eyelids.
I will not continue, but my point is that the bulk of these women are still wearing makeup and we cannot encourage this as the expectation for 'regular' makeup-free women.

    • Aubrey Green

I actually do have dark eyelids and people often think I'm wearing eye shadow when I'm not, so this could be true for some of them. I agree with your comment though.

    • Mia

I agree about Beyonce, she's fully make-up-ed... she did not "wake up like this" ...

    • VoicOff

Monica is Italian. Dark thick hair: the eyelashes can be naturally thick and black.

I agree most of theses women don't wake up like this. But it's not only make up: it good lighting and professional photograph.

  • Jo

Am a bit disappointed. Eva Mendes for example is wearing lippy and her eyebrows are done, Beyonce is wearing lip-gloss and also has her brows done and just two of them... Hardly make up free.

  • http://www.tweevalleyhigh.com/ Kristina, TweeValleyHigh

GWYNETH PALTROW is not not wearing makeup...

  • overanalyzer

Yes, there is no freaking way she's not wearing makeup.

  • Janet Lee

I wouldn't count anyone under 30 in this category. I mean, Demi Lovato? Come on! She's 20! Don't even get me started with the 14-year-old Paris Jackson. And it also needs to be in HD colour. None of this hazy, soft-focus black and white. They all look great without makeup, but it would count more if I could see them in natural light. In colour.

  • Megan

Jessica Pare takes me damn breath away.

  • Dani

Beyoncé and Gwyneth definitely have makeup on. It's pretty obvious. The rest look pretty natural and are all gorgeous. Especially Paris Jackson. She is stunning.

  • Anne V

Please remember that most of these pictures have probably been digitally altered, either in terms of correcting beauty-flaws, light and shadow etc. - even if the women aren't wearing actual makeup (which I highly doubt in some of the cases). In addition to that, most of the women in the photos spend a lot of time and money on their looks, so even without additional makeup they will probably appear more made up or groomed than you and I. As someone mentioned above, Gwyneth is probably dying her lashes or wearing extentions, which apparently doesn't count as makeup...

  • TORborgie

No makeup? Riiiiiiiiiiight. Most have lip balm/lip stick and eyeliner on.

  • BonaventureD

Gwenyth is in "full slap" there-- blush, highlighter, lipstick, quite a bit of dark eye makeup.

Paris, Rashida, Eva and Claire also have on quite visible makeup.

It's fun to look at the differences between no makeup, no-makeup makeup, natural-ish looks.

  • lola

where is magdalena... 29 and still the most flawless creature ever

  • http://daydreamwithmestudio.blogspot.ca Magdalena

They look beautiful! Love love Christy, such a beauty! xx

  • Jennifer Marcucci

At least a quarter of these women have, at a minimum, their eyes tightlined which is one of the best makeup/no makeup tricks around...thank you Laura Mercier.

  • Elle M

    I love ITG readers.

  • Alyssa Gapske

Okay, Gwyneth has got to have makeup on.
