The Best Foundations For Every Skin Type

1

We asked for your favorite foundations, and you guys didn't mess around—we got almost 250 awesome recommendations. We read them all, counted up the votes, and now we have the definitive Top 10 (and why people love them, too):

1. Armani Maestro
Why it's a favorite:
“It literally just melts into your skin and doesn't feel cake-y at all. I can't use anything else now.”
“If you want a glow without looking orange, or you're desperate to look like you have even skin without looking unreal...this is it.”
“Light coverage, isn't oily, and it blends so easily that it takes about a minute to apply, tops—which is nice, as a person with a small child.”
“I have combo skin and it gives a beautiful, flawless finish.”

2. Chanel Vitalumière
Why it's a favorite:
“Moisturizing but not oily, and it gives skin a beautiful glow without appearing ‘shiny.’ The shade selection is phenomenal.”
“Gives you flawless skin that is the perfect matte for photos, and lasts all day.”
“The only product that has helped with my oily skin. Evens out my skin tone and doesn't cause me to break out.”
“Evens without causing flakiness on my dry, sensitive skin, and has the perfect amount of coverage. In warmer weather, I only put it on my T-zone and the tops of my cheekbones for a mattifying, perfecting effect.”

3. Laura Mercier Silk Creme
Why it's a favorite:
“The coverage is about as close to perfect as you can get. I find the best way to apply is start with a primer and then dab on the tiniest dots, starting in the middle of my face, around my nose, chin, etc. Using a clean Sephora Platinum Foundation brush, I gently start buffing the foundation into my skin. I kid you not, it's like someone is sweeping a Photoshop wand across your face.”
“My lifeline for the past three years. I have combination/acne-prone skin, which needs coverage, but of course I still want it to look like skin, and fortunately this foundation delivers on both counts.”
“Laura Mercier allllllll the way for fair, sensitive, and acne-prone skin.”

4. Bourjois Healthy Mix
Why it's a favorite:
“You can't see it on your skin and it doesn't settle into pores or fine lines, plus it's packed with antioxidants! Semi-matte finish and a reasonable price tag.”
“It makes my dry skin look glowing and it smells really good!”
“I've heard it's made by Chanel so I checked the addresses on the bottles and they're the same!”

5. MAC Face and Body
Why it's a favorite:
“Love the finish; it looks so natural but hides discoloration—also buildable to light-medium coverage.”
“No matter how closely I look, it's impossible to tell I'm wearing foundation. It doesn't get cake-y or anything.”
“Love how light it is, and how you can use a tiny amount when your skin is behaving, but can also build it up when skin needs some extra coverage. Stays on for hours.”

6. Clinique Even Better
Why it's a favorite:
“I'm usually wary of foundations that tell you that they'll fix things about your skin, but I have noticed a bit of a change in my skin tone at the end-of-day wash off. Clinique is basically the bomb; I don't know why I didn't take my grandma's advice until now.”
“So hard to find a good color match for pale skin, but so far this is probably the best I've tried in terms of looking normal and not too orange or pink or yellow. And it evens out redness without feeling heavy.”
“Good for sensitive skin and doesn't make me break out. Plus, good coverage and not too heavy.”

7. Diorskin Nude
Why it's a favorite:
“You can layer for coverage or mix it with a bit of moisturizer for a sheer look. It’s ridiculously comfortable.”
“Lovely, natural finish with a bit of glow and a bit of velvet.”
“Can easily be built up without looking heavy. It covers pigmentation, but my skin still shows through. Makes my skin glow without looking shiny or glittery and it does not settle into fine lines. I'm on my second bottle now and I think this is the first time I have ever purchased the same foundation twice.”

8. Make Up For Ever HD Invisible Cover
Why it's a favorite:
“Has coverage, but still sheer so you look like you have really good skin.”
“The only foundation I've found that matches my skin EXACTLY. It's awesome. It goes on like a dream and no one can tell I have foundation on.”
“The be-all, end-all. It looks like my skin, only better. It's also buildable—I haven't used concealer since I started using MUFE foundation a couple of years ago.”
“Covers every blemish and makes my skin look flawless in pictures (which is good, you know, for posterity!).”

9. Nars Sheer Glow
Why it's a favorite:
“Blends seamlessly with my skin, provides sheer-to-medium coverage, and photographs so beautifully. I've repurchased at least four times.”
“Provides great coverage and gives skin a beautiful glow. Love it.”
“So easy to apply sparingly just where you need it, or build it up for fuller coverage. It's very glowy and moist, too.”
“Feels so nice against the skin.”

10. Kevyn Aucoin The Sensual Skin Tinted Balm
Why it's a favorite:
“Coverage without covering. It doesn't hide my skin at all, but let me assure you that it perfects it."
"Takes zero effort to apply and comes in a very chic tube.”
“Flawless coverage and the range of shades is amazing.”

Great post. The only folks worth listening to on the makeup blogosphere are y'all and Lisa Eldridge. Rock on, ITG.

    • anonymous

Top shelf on Lisa? Yes please!

      • Diana

        YES!!!!!

  • KatInEurope

Love Maestro so much, but I actually own & use 6 (six) of this list. Oh dear, especially as my skin is actually pretty good...
Glad not to see Suqqu on this list, it is overrated junk!

    • Maryann

Wait-what?? I was going to Japan and wanted to check out their stuff! Do you mind explaining?

  • Abby Evans

Great favorites. Out of all the ones above, I either love them or want to try them!

I really need to try the Sensual Skin Enhancer, I hear it is amazing but the discoloration on my skin from recent acne is my main concern. The texture of my skin is totally fine, a bit on the dry side but if anyone could remark on the actual coverage of the product I would really appreciate it! I currently have MAC Face and Body, which I'm sure I'll love when the marks go away but it definitely does not cover much of anything for me. Feels great on my face and I like the fact that it is water-based.

Maestro was a bit heavy for me but Dior Skin Nude is the best. I've been using it for years and switch to the BB version for summer. Great coverage and dewy finish especially for lighter complexions. Cover under-eye and blotchiness for a glowy look.

  • Marlenne

I can also recommend the Bourjois Haooy Light! And I really want to try the MAC Face and Body, sounds really good and just what I need!

  • Tori

Koh gen doh! Surprised it didn't make the list, it is $$$$ but I've found it lasts

  • Janine

I keep hearing Vapor is a good organic line.

  • Janine

    Make that "Vapour."

For anyone looking to try out NARS Sheer Glow, Neutrogena Healthy Skin is an EXACT dupe, and wayyyy cheaper.

    • Katy

      U da best girl

  • Annie Lindsay

At this point, I'm willing to pay for a trip to the UK just to get my hands on the Bourjois foundation. I've heard so many good things!

    • Nina R.

I'm pretty sure that Bourjois Healthy Mix is available on ASOS.

      • Annie Lindsay

Omg this is wonderful news. Thank you!

        • Harlowrose

I did the same thing and ordered from Asos. Google images/swatches by bloggers helped me pick a shade.

  • spankulert

Jane Iredale does pretty natural makeup, and I've gotten many compliments when wearing her foundation(my skin is fairly shit). I think the new big thing in the natural circuit is the Kjær Weiss ones? They look SO pretty. I have a sample on the way to try out yay :D

  • ruth

I wish someone would do this for women over 50

    • Libby

I am well over 50 and only use the Bare Escentials products. The "foundation" is not a liquid, but a mineral powder. I swear by all their products: the very best thing for all of us of "a certain age"..

  • Harlowrose

    I know, right?

  • fashionallure

I use Estee Lauder Double Wear (Light) and I am really surprised that it did not make it to the top ten
