Though I guess it isn't technically a foundation, I use Sunday Riley's Effortless Breathable Tinted Primer in medium every day! http://intothegloss.com/2013/06/sunday-riley-effortless-breathable-tinted-primer/

    • Carla

      Love this product!

    • Kcd14

      Same!

    • corina

This didn't work for me at all! Was so excited to try it but it made my skin itch. Bottle says to use something like 2-3 pumps which I think is way too much. Not sure what was in this that made my skin so unhappy!

  • Anna

Dr. Hauschka Translucent Foundation in 00 - my HG for very sensitive, very fair skin!

    • katie

I use this in 01 and mix it with Dr. Perricone No Foundation Foundation to match my skin tone. They both have a very light, herbal scent and the Dr. Perricone has an SPF of 15 or 20 (don't remember which). They're both lighter options and not the choice you want if you're looking for a matte, denser coverage, but they are so natural looking and make your skin glow.

  • Jimena Fr.

L´Oreal Magic Nude, as perfect as Giorgio Armani´s Maestro Foundation.

    • Anne

Is this a good choice for slightly oily skin? thanks!

    • Sara

+1 This stuff is amazing! I'm East Asian with very yellow skin and this foundation isn't pink like most other drugstore foundations. The only caveat is that it doesn't cover much so it wouldn't be good for people with acne. It also has a ton of silicone so those that don't do well with the 'cones should stay away. Otherwise, it's amazing!

  • ITGMackenzie

I used to be too scared of cake-face syndrome to even look at foundation, but Kevyn Aucoin Sensual Skin Tinted Balm is coverage without covering. It doesn't hide my skin at all, but let me assure you that it perfects it. It also takes zero effort to apply and comes in very chic tube. Nothing but love for the geniuses over at KA.

  • amy

I have really sensitive skin so I use Smashbox Camera Ready BBCream everyday! Their BB allows you to easily build up for heavier coverage. I apply it with a mineral brush. Stays put. Reduces redness. Balances my skin tone. Feels weightless!

  • Kasia

Armani Luminous Silk in #4 - it looks perfect on photos! I also love Dior Forever Foundation which has more coverage than Armani. When it comes to cheaper ones, I'll use anything from Bourjois.

    • Tanya

Luminous Silk in #5.5 im with you! And if my skin is being not very nice I'll layer with Sunday Riley Effortless in Medium under like @ITGElizabeth:disqus

  • http://myfakeyelashes.tumblr.com/ Kara Nesvig

Covergirl whipped clean of all things! Feels like Armani for $54 less!

    • MsEaves

Ooh, I'll have to look into this!

  • Amanda Raponi

It's not foundation, but Dior Hydralife Tinted Moisturizer

  • Sarah

Neutrogena Healthy Skin Liquid Make up. I know it's drugstore but it's never oily in summer, never dry in winter, and it even has spf 20. It goes on smoothly and while it may not be thick enough to completely make any blemishes disappear, I definitely feel prettier once it's on!

  • maggie

Chanel Vitalumiere Aqua in B30. Love it for my oily skin, so light and looks natural!

    • Amanda Garner Burgess

Custom Blend Foundation from Movtives By Loren Ridinger. If you dont have an exact match why wear foundation?

  • The Grynne

The now discontinued formula of Koh Gen Do Aqua Foundation is my overall favourite; I got 2 back up bottles in my shade, when I heard that the reformulated Aqua Foundation is not as light/seamless. When I layer it over a drop of Armani Maestro Fusion Makeup, the effect is amazing: perfect coverage, but with a dewy, skin-like finish. On the budget end, I'm also very fond of Bourjois Healthy Mix Serum.

    • newbrunette

Bourjois Healthy Mix is my favorite! Americans can order it from Asos cheap!

      • MsEaves

I've been looking for Bourjois--I never knew you could get it on asos!

    • Nina R.

When did they reformulate the Koh Gen Do?? More information please!

      • tiana

They reformulated it in October of this year and they also redid the packaging too :(

    • dana

yup, Bourgois Healthy Mix is my fave. I've heard it's made by Chanel so I checked the addresses on the bottles and they're the same! Sometimes for night if I want something heavier I'll use Make Up For Ever HD.

  • CJ

Supergoops' SPF 35 Daily Correct CC Cream: again, though not technically a foundation, this little tube of paraben-free joy evens out my skin, dries to a matte finish, and provides broad-spectrum UVA protection (perfect for skin cancer survivors like me). I love it so much, I even wear it out at night in lieu of traditional foundation.

    • CuriousM

I completely agree about SG's CC cream!

    • Andee

My favorite when I am not doing a "full face". Quick, but better than just plain old sunscreen.

  • Jessica

Armani Maestro!!! It literally just melts into your skin, and doesn't feel cake-y at all. I can't use anything else now.

  • Anne

THANK YOU! Really needed this post.
Right now I'm using a (literally) 3 euro foundation from a dutch store called HEMA. Actually kind of like it, it's just gone at the end of the day...

    Bourjois Healthy Mix....Bargain!!

    • The Grynne

Agreed! And luckily for Australians, it's easily available at Priceline.

  • Maree Sye

Le Metier de Beaute Classic Flawless Finish Foundation and Koh Gen Do Aqua Foundation - I swear by them both! Flawless but lightweight coverage. I am super oily but both of these manage to give my skin a natural matte finish and keep it that way almost the entire day.

  • Effie

Chantecaille's 'Compact Makeup' powder foundation is my favourite! It has a matte, velvet-y finish and goes on amazingly smooth on the skin. The result is medium-coverage and very natural.

  • Anne

Chanel Vitalumiere satin smoothing fluid foundation SPF 15, number 25.
It's just amazing! it gives you an effortless glow and it feels so natural.
if you're going out for brunch on a sunday and you're not in the mood for make up, you can put a little bit all over your face with out a moisturizer and a lip balm and curl your lashes.. BAM! your ready to go. TRUST ME!

  • Rachel LC

I swap between Chanel Vitalumiere Aqua compact foundation and Chanel Vitalumiere Ultra Light depending on the season. Also love the Koh Gen Do Aqua Foundation. All of these are light, moisturizing, buildable and leave me looking dewy, not cakey.

  • stefinmotion

Found Make Up Forever HD foundation when I was 18 (tried my roommate's - kinda gross but I'm glad I did) and have never let go.

I have super sensitive skin and I am just crazy about Garnier BB Cream. In my purse I have the Clinique BB cream. They cover everything, don't irritate my skin and blend beautifully.

  • http://www.paigeone.com/ Paige

Clinique Even Better Makeup SPF 15

    - Good for sensitive skin and doesn't make me breakout
    - Good coverage, not too heavy

Other favourite is Makeup Forever HD Foundation, but it's a little too expensive for me especially in Canada

  • Sarah Woehler

Estee Lauder's Futurist (which I pray won't be discontinued as rumor suggests), but I'm dying to try Kanebo Sensai Fluid Finish.

  • Abigail Cusick

Armani Face Fabric and Maestro foundation, Missa BB Cream, RMS "un" cover-up,

Dior Nude! You can layer for coverage or mix it with a bit of moisturizer for a sheer look. Its ridiculously comfortable.

  • Aliana

My all time favorite is Burberry Sheer foundation, mix with their fresh glow for extra radiance! I have my sister and mom hooked! It's easy and seamless, no fuss makeup, great for all ages.

  • Kells

I am loving the Marc Jacobs gel foundation. It's light but when it sets it provides more coverage than I expected. Doesn't look like a mask. I am fair so finding something that doesn't make me look like a mannequin is a win.

    • chicnoir

Amen sister, another genus gel lover here.

  • JIO

I have dealt with moderate acne and now as I continue my health/skin care regimen, my face is almost free of acne. However, I continue to be careful about what goes on my skin and the only product that has helped with my oily skin, evens out my skin tone and does not cause me to breakout is Chanel Mat Lumiere powder. I always got compliments on my skin every time I wear it!

    • corina

Love this! Same story for me. Suffered with moderate acme that drove me crazy, almost all clear now!, obsessively careful about what touches the skin on my face, LOVE Chanel's mat lumiere powder, and I get compliments on it every time I wear it too! I always recommend it to girls in similar situations or with oily skin. Recipe for perfect, flawless skin.

  • Nicci

I think I have to go with YSL Touche Eclat - decent coverage and a very natural finish. Becca Radiant Skin is my favorite right now for a more satin finish/more coverage though.

  • Andrea Karen

I love Picture Perfect Foundation by Face Stockholm. I have very fair skin, and it matches perfectly!

  • http://lindsaysuejohnson.com/ Lindsay Sue

Laura Mercier tinted moisturizer. I like to buy the small, travel versions at Sephora because they're 1. more bang for your buck and 2. good for a girl on the go!

    • http://www.pauleneaguirre.com/ Pau

totally! I do the same. its like only 10 bucks at sephora and lasts so long!!!! plus you can throw it in your purse. I bought mine 6 months ago and its still not done!

  • Kirsten M

Nars Sheer Glow in Mont Blanc. It blends seamlessly with my skin, provides sheer-to-medium coverage, and photographs so beautifully. I used to use it every day but have relaxed my routine lately... but it is still the only foundation I will ever turn to when I need to "pull it together". I've repurchased at least four times.

    • LaurenElisabeth

I second that!!! Recently switched to Stila Illuminating Beauty Balm but Nars Sheer Glow in Mont Blanc is always at the ready.

    • Sarah

      Nars Sheer Glow is heaven.

  • lisa

Make Up Forever HD foundation with Becca Bronzing Skin Perfector or Charlotte Tillbury Magic Glow underneath because skin should be flawless and glowing. Always.

  • wanderlust371

For me, the foundation to end all foundations is Armani Luminous Silk.

I also like Chanel Vitalumiere Aqua, Burberry Sheer Luminous (although I couldn't find an exact color match), and Nars Tinted Moisturizer.

I also need to try RMS Uncover Up.

  • Katy

Armanic Face Fabric is my go-to right now. It goes on so smooth, provides medium-coverage and doesn't look cake-y when I layer.

  • ITGLacey

My favorite thing is Suntegrity Tinted 5 in 1 Natural Moisturizing Face Suncreen—you can buy it at Beauty Sage: http://rstyle.me/~18KQR

I break out from most foundation & most sunscreen and my skin is so pale/my undertones are so weird (thanks, unconventional genetic makeup!) that I'm usually impossible to match.

But this is hydrating, wide spectrum, vegan, & has enough color to keep me from looking like some kind of sea creature from the part of the ocean where there's no light & every other animal is either Cthulhu or a lantern fish.

  • ITGLacey

Um, this is an amazing review, & the product sounds pretty ideal as a fellow member of The Pale Squad.

  • Celleste

My absolute favourite is SR Effortless Breathable Tinted Primer... but now it's near impossible to get where I live. Tried Giorgio Armani's Maestro and Face Fabric, didn't like them, not similar at all. Currently I'm testing out Dr Hauschka's Translucent Makeup in 00 and it's almost on par with the SR Primer, pretty good, feels like nothing, loving it. During the day all I want from a foundation is to make my skin look healthy and beautiful, not covered with makeup. For night's out when I want some coverage I wear Bourjois Healthy Mix Serum :D (I can't wear chemical sunscreen in any amount, big red blisters and cysts everywhere which is why I'm starting to hate GA foundations)

  • Angelika

I love Clarins Everlasting Foundation SPF15. I got away with not wearing foundation up until a couple of years ago (I'm now 26), and I find that Clarins' foundation applies smoothly and evenly (no striping or splotchiness, and it matches my skin tone seamlessly) . I use it under my eyes, and around my nose and mouth (not all over), which is why that seamless application is so great. Also, I use it with Clarins' Instant Smooth Perfecting Touch on those days when my skin is a little dry or I feel like some early onset wrinkles are getting the best of me, ha!

  • m.fay

Bourjois Healthy Mix Serum Foundation (Asos US). It makes my dry skin look glowing and it smells really good!

  • therealblonde

Chanel Perfection Lumiere - it's perfection and make my skin look velvety. I just wish it wasn't so hard to get hold of my perfect color (Beige 10)!

  • http://www.pauleneaguirre.com/ Pau

Chantecaille Oil Free Gel Foundation is the best! I'm doing a post on makeup later today, check it out @ http://www.pauleneaguirre.com <--- I blog about Art, Travel, Fashion, Makeup, and anything inspiring! I love Into The Gloss!

  • Natalie

Laura Mercier Illuminating Tinted Moisturizer! So glowy!

  • softy

MUFE HD foundation - the only foundation that i've found that matches my skin EXACTLY. it's awesome. it goes on like a dream and no one can tell i have foundation on.

  • Rachel

Hourglass Immaculate. It keeps my super oily skin matte all day.

  • Tara

Having a hard skin color to match, I've found that the 12 hr matte based clinque foundation works well but I mix it with a paler loreal color in order to adjust the coloring. For full coverage, I do enjoy Kat Von D foundation, however, again I find myself mixing in lighter less expensive foundations in order to get the color right with the correct coverage.

  • Laure

I mix two shades of CoverGirl Queen season to season (by far the best Drugstore color matches for African American skin) and reach for Chanel Vitalumiere in Amber for date nights and parties.

  • Aubrey Green

I don't wear/can't wear foundation. I don't like the way they feel and also my skin is SUPER sensitive and acne prone (also dry), so I think I'm screwed.

    • ITGLacey

Hey, nothin' wrong with the odd dot of concealer & a good moisturizer. I totally empathize with the sensitive/dry/acne-prone thing. Been there, done that...still being there, still doing that.

      • Amanda Raponi

        Me too, it sucks

  • Kimberly Page

IQ Beauty Of Course Sheer Activity Base. Love , love,
love it! It's impossible to make a mistake applying this stuff. Very
natural and pretty look for my skin.

  • Levi

My skin is a little complicated to begin with.. I used to have excema (sp?) when I was little, and it's left me with a faint scarring on my cheeks. Follow that with Chicken Pox in Grade 9, and you're left with a complexion that has some textural issues. This is why as much as I want to wear a lightweight foundation, I find that medium to heavy actually allow me to wear less but cover more. My go to recently has been Laura Mercier Silk Creme Foundation in Bamboo Beige. The colour is not perfect (but there's not a lot of options) but the coverage is about close to perfect as you can get. I find the best way of application is starting with a primer (using Smashbox PhotoReady right now, but generally the rule is to grab whatever I have lying around) and then after letting that sink in, I dab on the tiniest dots on my face, starting in the middle of my face, around my nose, chin, etc. Using a clean Sephora Platinum Foundation brush I gently start buffing the foundation into my skin. I kid you not, it's like someone is sweeping a Photoshop wand across your face, the results are soo smooth! I layer until I get the desired amount of coverage (a little goes a LONG way) and then set with a powder if so inclined. Also have applied on with dabbing motions using a Beauty Blender sponge and that seems to work too. Sometimes I finish with a quick mist of rosewater spray to 'unpolish' the makeup a bit. If I had any complaints, I would say, it can get a little oily towards the end of the day however that is also my own skin issue and not techinically the makeup's fault. The limited colour range also leaves much to be desired. Last thing, I sometimes use a lighter coverage foundation like Lancome Visionairre all over my face and then just lightly dab this on where I want even more coverage and that has always given me flawless results too!

  • Grey

Chanel Vitalumiere Aqua. It evens out my skin tone without causing flakiness on my dry, sensitive skin, and has the perfect amount of coverage. In warmer weather, I only put it on my T-zone and the tops of my cheekbones for a mattifying, perfecting effect.

  • Taylor

Sunday Riley's effortless breathable tinted primer in light or Mac's face and body! No joke the best stuff.

  • LoSpaz

Urban Decay Naked Skin. I've got oily skin and nothing stays put like this does while still offering pretty lightweight, semi-matte coverage. It's the type of look I'd like to get from a tinted moisturizer/BB cream, except my skin can't take all the extra moisture and those slide right off.

    • http://instagram.com/funshine_sky bunnygrrrl3000

This broke out my sensitive stupid skin! Its such a good foundation, but I am allergic to it and my pores just never want to let go (= zits!!)

      • LoSpaz

Aw, bummer! I can see where it probably has some not-good-for-sensitive-skin stuff in it, as it is super slick and light but stays put so well.

  • http://www.dressmonsta.com/ Daul Be

I'm obsessed with Chanel Vitalumiere Aqua Foundation. The packaging looks like a sunblock, and since it's oil-free, you do have to give it a good shake before applying it on your skin. It smells heavenly. The coverage is light to medium. My trick is that after cleansing my skin, slapping on Nars toner (like really slapping your face, it sounds painful but it really pushes the product into your skin), same thing goes for moisturizer. Then while my face is still a bit damp from the moisturizer, I dab Chanel Vitalumiere on my skin from the center of my face and blend it outward with clean fingers. It literally melts into my skin and lasts all day. Did I mention that it has SPF 15 too?! I would never step out without this baby on.

  • Nicole

YSL touche eclat. had my makeup done recently by a makeup artist for a friends fashion (i brought my own foundation) and she said it was one of the best she'd used..

  • murt

I always keep going back to MAC Face and Body - I just love the finish; it looks so natural, but does hide discolouration - it's also buildable to a light-medium coverage.

My other favourites are Armani Luminous Silk for a more polished look, and Bourjois Healthy Mix.

FYI: I have dry skin - I guess my biggest issue with foundation is having it cake on dry patches.

  • Lana

Makeup Forever HD Foundation in 117
For reference: I have combination skin and I am prone to pimples. So far this has provided the best medium coverage that lasts. all. day.

  • Lionessa

My favorite at the moment is Make Up Forever Mat Velvet+. A close runner up would be Estee Lauder Double Wear Light. Both are fuss free, blend seamlessly with my skin and don't leave me shiny. They can also be layered for more coverage where needed.

  • mmolly

Ellis Faas Skin Veil S101. It was the moment that I finally felt like a foundation matched my pale skin without the whiteout effect. Light coverage, but just makes everything look perfect and arrives at just the right destination between matte/dewy. As a bonus, with a very sharp looking silver pen, I finally found a product that fits with my fashion aesthetic.

    • Poulette

I love Ellis Faas as well, and don't know a single person who has used it who doesn't love it. Her concealer is also out of this world... I don't wear it on a daily basis but when I do it's magical....

  • Lauren

Joeur tinted for the days im unafraid. Touche eclat foundation for the not so easy days

  • Ryden Dogherty

Marc Jacobs Genius Gel foundation- light and silky on the skin and no primer needed since the gel evens out texture.. I'm obsessed!

  • Laura Mitchell

Chanel CC Cream and Perfection Lumiere. Gives you flawless skin that is the perfect matte for photos and lasts all day

  • Allison

I don't think there is one perfect product.. I think it takes a village (team?) of products. I use Urban Decay Naked foundation and set it with a translucent powder from Clinique.

  • Daria

Giorgio Armani's Face Fabric is the best I've tried

  • http://instagram.com/funshine_sky bunnygrrrl3000

I'm only allowed to use Almay or Clinique, according to my derm, but after a year of awesome skin, I decided to stray into Sephora land.

Last week I would have said Urban Decay Naked foundation, but all these zits are making me think other wise :( :( :(

I'm doomed to Almay's limited color range foreeevveerrrr.

    • anonymous

Try Koh Gen Do. Very gentle ingredients, not likely to irritate.

  • Isis

The only foundation that did not oxidize (I have tan skin and like a glow), would be Armani's Luminous Silk...I mix it with fluid sheer..and use the foundation brush....these are probably the only things in the cosmetic industry that amaze me...all Armani products are like magic. If you want a glow without looking orange or you're desperate to look like you have even skin without looking unreal...this is it. Sorry for the longest sentence in history

  • Teckie

L'Oreal LUMI liquid foundation for something on the cheap, Makeup Forever HD liquid foundation for high-end.

  • FrauWerner

Bobbi Brown Tinted Moisturizer and Foundation Stick. It's goes on even, is not heavy, and I can apply the foundation when and where I need it with the foundation brush. Leaves a natural looking finish.

  • Leah Chaudoin

I love Giorgio Armani Maestro foundation. It's got light coverage, isn't oily and it blends so easily it takes about a minute to apply tops - which is nice as a person with a small child.

  • bluesky557

Stila Natural Finish foundation. But they discontinued it! *sob*

  • estheresther

I mix a drop of Guerlain Photo'Perfexion (in Perfect Petal, none of the other high end brands had such a pale color) with a drop of moisturizer and a drop of oil in the winter. Only moisturizer in the summer.

    • Dominika Król

      Isn't that Givenchy?

      • estheresther

Oops yes, I've edited my comment. It has a holographic Givenchy logo on the lid!

    • The Grynne

I haven't tried the Photo'Perfexion, but I do like Photo'Perfexion Light a lot. If only the packaging wasn't so terrible - the lid is hard to get off (especially with hands that have moisturiser on them) and sponge applicator on mine keeps coming off with the lid when I open it.

  • bellatoes

With an oily-combination skin type, I always stayed true to Bobbi Brown's tinted moisturizer which is amazing and just recently have been trying out L'oreal's Magic Nude foundation (was really excited to see Mandy Moore's Top Shelf consisting of that product). They are both great for light to medium coverage. When it comes to concealing a little more, I found that the foundation by Tarte - amazonian clay 12-hr with SPF 15 has a really great matte finish that stays on nicely throughout its wear. Sometimes during the colder months, I prefer a bit of a dewy finish and so I find myself mixing in a drop or two of Mac's Face & Body to the Tarte foundation. Really great products, they haven't let me down!

  • Sammy

Armani's Designer Lift (SPF 20) Foundation. Life changing. It always makes my skin look youthful and fresh.

  • Jax

best cheapy is maybelline bb cream or becca Shimmering Skin Perfector

  • Nina de Wit

Estee Lauder invisible fluid make up. Looks perfectly natural, but buildable enough to cover some redness on my cheeks. And has no scent! Lisa Eldridge turned me on to it in this video: http://youtu.be/gIeEk9s_Tv0

  • Francesca

Laura Mercier Oil Free Tinted Moisturizer is my go-to. It's definitely lighter than a classic foundation, but is buildable and provides just enough coverage. My paler-than-pale and dry skin benefits from the hint of color and dewey finish that this product in "Porcelain" provides.

  • Lucy

My HG foundation is without a doubt Chanel Vitalumiere Aqua. I started using it while my skin was fairly irritated, broken out, and oily. My skin has since cleared up, and now is relatively dry, but it still gives the same flawless, glowy finish. It is moisturizing but not oily, and it gives skin a beautiful glow without appearing "shiny." The shade selection is phenomenal, the Beige range fits my very yellow-toned skin, while the Beige Rose shades match my very fair and pink-toned friend's skin. The coverage goes on very sheer at first, but can easily be layered for more camouflage, all without looking heavy or caked on. Overall, amazing!

    • http://www.dressmonsta.com/ Daul Be

It's my favorite foundation too! The shade fits my Asian skin perfectly.

  • Effie

Maybelline Fit Me is the best foundation ever - at least for slightly dry/normal skin. It looks amazing, very natural. Plus it is super-cheap! Wayne Goss recommended it, and he is - always - absolutely right about this one. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zqbh-CEBK38

    • bluesky557

I tried and tried and tried to use this foundation. I bought it in like 4 different shades and could never find one that matched my skin well enough. I'm a fair-ish white girl, which doesn't sound like a problem, but my skin has a lot of yellow undertones. I have the worst time matching it.

      • Ellie

That´s too bad! I´m pretty pale, so I use the lightest available shade (in Germany), no. 105. My skin is definitely yellow-ish, and 105 fits extremely well.

        • bluesky557

I'm not super pale, more like medium pale, and the undertones are all just too pink or orange for me. I even looked at them again today in the store and I can tell that none are right for me.

      • Katy

Not sure if you saw the above comments, but L´Oreal Magic Nude has yellow undertones!

        • bluesky557

I checked them out at Walgreen's today! It's hard to see what the actual color is without opening the bottle. I wish drugstores had testers available like dept stores did.

          • Katy

Go to Wal-Mart! Someone there has inevitably opened one up.

          • bluesky557

LOL. I am morally opposed to Wal-Mart, but maybe I'll check out Target.

  • magicmollys

My favorite is still the Kat Von D stuff. Embarrassing :/

  • Chachachicken

Personally LOVE the new Kjaer Weis foundation. It's an organic formulation, but it works better than a lot of the conventional formulas. I'm a totall sucker for the fancy packaging too. http://kjaerweis.com/shop/face.html/

  • Emma

My skin tone has never been very even, so sometimes I feel as though I've tried it all. I'm also a very mood based human, so I tend to switch it up day to day. The current ones in rotation are Clinique Even Better, BareMinerals, and that new kid L'Oreal Magic Nude Liquid Powder, who I'm not very well acquainted with just yet.
I'll have to say that my favorite out of those is probably the Clinique. I'm usually quite wary of foundations that tell you that they'll fix things about your skin because foundation is basically just clogging your pores for hours and hours and I don't understand how something good can come from that (but hey! At least you look good!). But I have noticed a bit of a change in my skin tone at the end-of-day wash off. Clinique is basically the bomb, I don't know why I didn't take my grandma's (and probably yours, too) advice until now.
(I feel like it should also be mentioned that Laura Mercier's tinted moisturizer kicks every other tinted moisturizer's ass. I'm a dancer, and I don't like to wear foundation when I dance, but I do like to have a little something. Laura is the way to go in that department.)

After a few years with Chanel Vitalumiere Aqua, I discovered YSL Touche Eclat, and fell for its color range (they have some nice neutral, beige tones), as well as its natural look and lightweight feel. Then I looked over the ingredient list more carefully. What a bummer. Among the worst culprits was octinoxate/ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate, a sunscreen with a less-than-stellar safety profile (http://www.ewg.org/skindeep/ingredient/704203/OCTINOXATE/). I'm not an all-natural extremist by any means, and if I'm spending the day toasting in the sun I'll happily slather on chemical sunscreen, but the reality is that many of them aren't totally benign and I'd rather just apply them as needed under my foundation. Or opt for physical sunscreens.

If anyone has recommendations for great foundations that don't contain ingredients with non reassuring safety profiles, please let me know! (I'm looking into Koh Gen Do right now…)

    • anonymous

I agree re: YSL Touche Eclat. Great color match for me but I am unhappy with the sunscreen chemicals and with its staying power. It looks great when I put it on but by the afternoon it's gone. It's pointless if used without primer and powder because it truly disappears in an hour or two.

I have the Koh Gen Do moisture foundation. While the ingredients are great and it feels wonderful on the skin, it's a narrow color range (not perfect for me) and too much coverage. I will try their Aqua foundation. Overall they are a good company for sensitive skins and healthy ingredients.

  • marta

Smashbox Studio Skin & Teint Idole Lancome!

  • Amaltee

Diorskin Nude. A bit of coverage (for my taste actually on the heavier side, but great for nights out when you want to look perfect), lovely, natural finish with a bit of glow and a bit of velvet. And shade 20 is pretty much spot on for me. I have a lot of foundations, but this is the one I reach for when I want to look my best (i.e. all the time...)

  • k80

After trying many, I now swear by MAC Pro Longwear Concealer around my nose and chin. As someone who suffers from redness, I found that most other foundations I tried would slide off by the end of the day. This stuff does not budge and melts into skin looking totally natural. It's a liquid formula so it feels like wearing a foundation and you can apply it with a brush or fingers. I wouldn't be without it! (I mix two shades, NC20 and NW15, and I decant them into a small container which I can throw into my bag so I have it on me at all times)

  • Danni

Armani Luminous Silk foundation; hands down winner for combination skin. The silicone-based formula keeps my dry areas moisturized while keeping shine at bay in my T-zone. It also photographs like a dream. Armani is one of the few houses to offer really nuanced shades for darker skin; trust me when I tell you this is a rare and remarkable find.

Honorable mention: Bobbi Brown Stick Foundation. Classic, portable, and wide shade range.

  • raissa

Lunasol Water Cream (I haven't tried the new Skin Modeling formula yet). The only foundation my super sensitive, clog-prone skin can tolerate AND the most beautiful I've found--slightly dewy, utterly natural, with a great shade range for olive/neutral skin.

  • Sarita

I use Iman's BB Cream in Earth Medium during these colder months because it's got a heavier coverage. In the summer, I'm a sucker for Nars' Tinted Moisturizer in Polynesia (Dark 1).

    • stephanee

I love me some Iman she has a CC cream coming too did you know? I wear Clay Medium its the best. Nars tinted too how great we have twinsie taste lol

  • Chelsea van den Berg

My favourite foundation, isn't technically a foundation. I use and swear by MAC Cosmetics Prep + Prime BB Beauty Balm.

Super light, the perfect tint and coverage and gives a awesome dewy finish.

    Highly reccomeneded!

  • jantina

    Tinted Moisturizer from Laura Mercier

  • ITGLindaJ

Bourjois Healthy Mix (best drugstore foundation ever) or Chanel Vitalumiere if I'm spurging

  • Cin

Koh Gen Do Maifanshi Aqua it's my fave!

  • stephanee

my holy grail was Bobbi Brown's oil free spf 15 foundation in 6.5. The EXACT color of my skin. I have normal skin and I take care of it and get compliments without makeup on but the compliments I got when I wore Bobbi's was remarkable. The formula has changed which just pisses me off why change a good thing! Now the hunt continues ...

    • bluesky557

Ugh, I hate it when companies mess with a good product. My go-to was Stila's Natural Finish foundation and they've discontinued it.

      • stephanee

I remember Stilas Natual Finish I never used it but my friends loved it! What are using now bluesky557?

        • bluesky557

I have one last bottle that I am hoarding and haven't made the jump to another brand yet. I'm considering Benefit and Nars.

        • bluesky557

I finally got a replacement foundation that I love--Urban Decay Naked Skin. I'm really pleased with it!

  • Tori

    koh gen do- moisture

  • Maddie

Laura Mercier Mineral Powder foundation. I keep trying all the fad and new foundations but time and again I just keep on coming back still after 7 years.

  • Patricia Montenegro

Oh my! Easy -- the Kevyn Aucoin Sensual Skin Enhancer. It's my HG.

  • Yelena

Love , love ,love my Giorgio Armani Maestro Cream compact(was not impressed by regular Maestro). I have combo skin and it gives beautiful and flawless finish. Yelena

  • Taylor

L'Oreal Magic Skin Beautifier B.B. Cream. Has a better coverage/staying power than many other BB's I've tried. on Great on combo skin

  • Hannah

Clinique Even Better SPF 15 in (the lightest shade) linen. So hard to find a good color match for pale skin, but so far this is probably the best I've tried in terms of looking normal and not too orange or pink or yellow. I think Clinique describes 'linen' as suited for neutral undertones with a balance of pink and yellow, or something like that, and it seems to even out a lot of my redness without feeling heavy, so it works for me.

  • kuku

i absolutely swear by boujois healthy mix. I will spill some serious coin on a great foundation if I had to, but this one is ridiculously cheap. the coverage is really natural and undetectable yet makes my patchy acne scarred skin look flawless, and it stays put in the humid Australian summer.

I also think estee lauder double wear light is beautiful. but the limited range of shades can be a little frustrating.

    • renp

Hi Kuku, I am glad you think so too, I wasn't sure if it is me being in denial or if the Bourjouis Healthy Mix foundation suprisingly stays on my oily/combo skin in this weather x

  • SJ

Armani Luminous Silk always a winner for me. Have gone through so many bottles and they have a great shade range. I have very dry, eczema prone skin with a bunch of pigment issues and all. I love it, feels silky and moisturizing.

  • Tanita Razaghi

I enjoy feeling that my make-up is somehow also benefitting my skin, so right now I'm enjoying using the the LUSH Skin Supplement mixed with a oil or serum.

  • Lisa2LDN

Dr. Jart BB Cream for everyday......effortless to apply and melts into your skin. For special days or nights, MUFE HD Invisible Cover Foundation adds more coverage but sheer so you look like you have really good skin.

  • samantha

Chanel - any of their foundations, but right now I'm using Vitalumiere Aqua and Perfection Lumiere the most. I think Armani's foundations are amazing too but I'm unfortunately allergic :(
    http://www.nopabeauty.com

  • chicnoir

The new Marc Jacobs Genus gel. It's the best for us combination and oiler girls. I just the elf studio powder brush(just three bucks at Target) to apply and I use the stippler method to apply to my face.

  • linden

The Urban Decay Naked Skin BB cream then I buff with Bare Minerals Mineral Veil. It makes my skin immaculate. No Photoshop required.

  • Juan Jaar

Dior Airflash- A bit of an oldie but goodie :) I'll admit, it took me a while to try it because I found it gimmicky- but friends, it truly is BEAUTIFUL. People will be asking what's different about your makeup all day, and I have 4 friends that can attest to it. It's Pretty expensive, BUT- but get almost 3 times the amount of product you'd get in most foundations, it's also a very adaptable medium coverage you can build up or down. Honorable mentions are Mac Face and Body (a CLASSIC sheer), Burberry Velvet Foundationis gorge (medium-full), and CoverGirl's 3in1 foundation is SPECTACULAR and well under the 50 dollar mark (Fullish coverage, Is possible to sheer down).

  • Sarah

I dislike foundations because I don't like that "mask" feeling on my face, but I like everything tinted, from tinted moisturizers (Laura Mercier, Nars) to BB creams (Korean, Japanese, Boscia...). Right now I use EltaMD Tinted Sunscreen, and I am very happy with it.

  • Charlotte

Kiehl's BB Cream works well for me. I have sensitive, slightly acne prone skin and it doesn't break me out, just evens out my complexion!

  • renp

I am an NC20, combination skin (oily t-zone with dry patches around the nose or mouth), needs a medium coverage, likes natural finish.

I recommend Shu Uemura Smooth Fit (very underrated) and Bourjouis Healthy Mix is very similar.

It is summer in Aus now, if I need more coverage and to make the foundation last, I will layer the Laura Mercier Secret Camouflage on problem areas and on my cheeks.

  • Kristin Sekora

I use Cle de Peau Beaute Refining Fluid Foundation. It manages to have good coverage while allowing some of my freckles to show through, a bit of

translucence since I have good skin and don't like too much coverage. It is actually quite beautiful.

  • Megan

Make Up Forever's Face & Body. It just looks like my skin but so much BETTER and healthier. I just wish it lasted longer.

  • Madison Bryan

I LOVE Merle Norman's Powder Base. I know it's for old ladies, but the zinc oxide in it makes it a GREAT sunscreen and good for acne. Woo woo!

  • Vanessa

YSL Touche Eclat. My skin ist really sensitive and dry. The coverage is perfect and it looks natural.

  • Nurdan Ipekci

chanel vitalimuiere aqua its a very light foundation

  • Jenee

Laura Mercier tinted moisturizer has been my go-to for about 4 yrs now.

  • Charlotte

Definitely Bobbi Brown Long Wear Foundation which I have just discovered! It looks so natural and you can build for really great coverage!

  • Alyssa Gapske

I use the CoverGirl x Olay Advanced Radiance. I love the idea of a make-up brand and skincare brand joining forces. Besides, Olay is classic!

  • Amanda

Chanel Vitalumiere Aqua. It's so light but I haven't need to use concealer with it. It seems to just disappear into my skin while evening everything out.

  • Val

Sunday Riley's tinted moisturizer and then Armani's face fabric for special occasions, meetings, presentations etc. Thanks for the great tips Emily!

  • sofia

Yves Saint Laurent, Le teint Touche eclat!

  • Erica

My favourite would have to be the Bourjois Healthy Mix Serum. You can't see it on your skin and it doesn't settle into pores or fine lines, plus it's packed with antioxidants! With a semi-matte finish and a reasonable price tag, it's definitely my HG foundation.

    • renp

Yes, doesn't settle into pores like many other foundations!

  • Allisaughn

HOURGLASS Veil Fluid Makeup Oil Free SPF 15. I use it with a beauty blender. It provides just the right amount of coverage, is very light so it looks natural and has SPF, boom.

  • carnush

    Chanel Vitalumiere Aqua.

  • mindyourmakeup.dk

My favorite foundation is definitely the "Face and body foundation" from Mac. I just love how light it is, and how you can use a tiny amount when your skin is behaving, but you can also build it up when the skin needs some extra coverage. When I use face and body foundation I feel that my skin looks really good but also really natural which is important.
Just remember to give it a god shake before you apply it. I use my fingers to apply and after applying it, it will stay on for hours :-) It is the best and I have tried a lot, a lot of foundations :-)

  • njanisch

The new CK One Foundation, its so light!

  • Jane S

I love how smooth and glowy my skin looks when i use the NARS Radiant Cream compact, buffed in with my Real Techniques Expert Face Brush. Actually, these very affordable brushes make all of my foundations look good. Can you please do a review on them? I also brought back a new Bourjois foundation (dupes for Chanel, since they own the company that makes Chanel cosmetics) called Happy Light and it's lovely.

  • hclsaltaicd

Can't wait for the results - I'm looking for a light foundation/tinted moisturizer that is all-natural AND working flawlessly. If its's really, really, REALLY good I would accept one that's not all-natural... Pretty sure my expectations are too high.

  • CM

I am obsessed with Dior Diorskin Nude Skin-Glowing Makeup. It is a medium coverage foundation but can easily be built up without looking heavy. It covers pigmentation but my skin still shows through. It makes my skin glow without looking shiny or glittery and it does not settle into fine lines. I'm on my second bottle now and I think this is the first time I have ever purchased the same foundation twice. Absolutely love it!

  • Ellen

To me, Make Up For Ever HD Invisible Cover Foundation is the be-all, end-all. It looks like my skin, only better. It's also buildable - I haven't used concealer since I started using MUFE foundation a couple of years ago.

  • Yassira

Kevyn Aucoin Sensual Skin Enhancer and Face Atelier flawless coverage and the range of shades are amazing almost bespoke so much to fit a variety of skintones http://sablebeauty.com

  • Farahomidi

I LOVE Carita Sublime Radiance Veil mixed with Kanebo Sensai Bronzing Gel in Amber BG62...They are both super sheer but still somehow provide the right amount of coverage while allowing my skin to still look breathable and real! The finish is a natural matte and the Bronzing gel is the best tone of sheer brown I've ever found and I mix it with everything!

  • emroar

I LOVE Dr. Jart+ black label detox BB cream but it's just a little too dark for my skin tone in the winter. Anyone know of anything similar that has a wider range (meaning more than one) of colors? I've tried a couple other BB creams but they just aren't as good.

  • Happy

Neutrogena Healthy Skin! Spf, seamless coverage, dewy finish and under $10! Perfect for suffers of dry skin like me.

  • Alice

Mine is teint lumiere by lancome, but at the moment i m using vitalumiere aqua by chanel even if i find the color a bit to yellowish for my skintone

  • emonch

RMS UnCover - it is 'clean and you can adjust coverage to be as heavy or as light as you like. I used to swear by "By Terry" illuminating stick but am trying to go organic

  • 90MPH

Nars Illuminating Moisturizer provides great coverage and gives skin a beautiful glow. Love it.

  • Kaitlyn

I use a BB or CC for everyday wear (either the Miracle Skin Transformer or Juice Beauty's CC Cream), but when I want absolutely flawless skin, I use Diorskin Air Flash Spray Foundation.

  • Rafaela

Chanel Vitalumiere Aqua - Blends in perfectly with the skin, gives a healthy glow

  • Sara

Chanel vitalumiere aqua in 30 (or b30). I could probably use a tad lighter shade in winter as my summer tan fades but sadly we don't get any lighter ones in Spain. I guess they assume everyone has darker skin but that's not the case at all.

  • Alison Bell

Laura Mercier Silk Creme Foundation in Rose Ivory has been my lifeline for the past three years. I have combination/acne-prone skin, which needs coverage, but of course I still want it to look like skin, and fortunately this foundation delivers on both counts. When my complexion improves somewhat, I would love to move on to something lighter...such as the much-vaunted Vitalumiere Aqua, or Armani Maestro.

    Alison Bell
    XO

  • Andee

Tom Ford Traceless liquid foundation. Fairly long lasting. Nice finish, not too matte, not too shiny. Good color match. Buildable, but still natural looking. Paraben-free.

  • Cee Jay

For me it's Armani Maestro for evenings, or the NARS radiant compact for day - I love the NARS because it's so easy to apply sparingly just where you need it, or build it up for fuller coverage. It's very glowy and moist too.

  • Alice Dennard

If I want sheer coverage I use NARS sheer glow which feels so nice against the skin. But usually I want a lot of coverage so I use Cover FX total cover cream. I use it with a damp beauty blender because if I don't it goes on like putty.

  • Frances Coral

Makeup Forever HD Foundation. Covers every blemish and makes my skin look flawless in pictures (which is good, you know, for posterity!)

  • Erica

Estee Lauder's BB cream is my current fave! Really lightweight, light-to-medium coverage, SPF, and dries to a matte, but not TOO matte, finish.

  • Melissa

I love blending LaPrairie skin caviar in porcelain blush and soleil peche . This foundation is AMAZING.. Non greasy, non cakey... Nothing but a smooth beautiful finish blended in seamlessly. After trying so many others that flake out on me, this is IT

  • Veda

Currently it's summer in the Southern Hemisphere so the go to is MAC face and body, but very little and really massaged into the skin to give a beautiful sheen! Or Rimmel's Wake me up!

  • GEE

Laura Mercier allllllll the way, oil-free, for fair, sensitive, and acne-prone

  • Jasmine

Superbalanced Foundation by Clinique. It's the most natural looking foundation I've tried, and I've tried over 25 high end foundations!

  • Jenelle

YSL's Le Teint Touche Eclat Foundation because they have it in so so many shades and it's so natural and buildable. And it's great on my dry skin because it gives me a bit of a glow.

  • PS

Dior Forever! Also, Dior Air is great, but way too expensive for the spray bottle which makes me feel like there's not that much product.

  • Eleanor Rigby

Armani luminous silk and Le Teint Touche Éclat from YSL. The only foundation I like. If not I'm pretty sure that Maestro Foundation from Armani and Chanel Vitalumière would do the trick, they seem very light for foundations.

For lighter coverage, I do like the Laura Mercier tinted moisturizer in Almond. These three are really suited for mixed type of skin and Asians, I personally find.

  • tamgerines

MAC's face and body foundation!! it evens out my skin tone for a flawless look that still manages to look very natural. through some sort of magic, no matter how closely i look it's impossible to tell i'm wearing foundation. it doesn't sit on top of the skin or get cakey or anything. and you really can't beat 4oz for $35 (though they now offer a smaller size which is perfect if you use less or travel).

  • LGF

I've loved this blog since it was basically just Emily, and I'm a little shocked that in all of the foundation deep dives that have been done, no one talks about Nars Luminizing Foundation! PEOPLE! WAKE UP! IT'LL CHANGE YOUR LIFE!

It's a somewhat new formulation from Nars, and it's insane for white folks who have a little yellow in their skin - e.g. they want to forego all of the wash-out caused by Dior's palette and even, to a degree, many of Armani's shades (though, don't get me wrong, I love Armani's foundations as much as the next girl).

Here's the real amazing part though - it's so wonderful that you don't have to set it with any kind of powder or dew it up with luminizer, and it LASTS ALL DAY. Just try it people!

    • Nina R.

Are you sure you have the name of this correct as I googled "Nars Luminizing Foundation" and there is nothing that matches your description other than Nars Sheer Glow. Is that what you mean? It's been around awhile and a number of people have mentioned it here. Would love to know exactly what foundation you are referring to!

  • Gretchen

    Laura Mercier silk creme!!!

  • Katrrr

Any suggestions for the super pale, super neutrally-undertoned, anyone?! I'm tempted to go looking for a white foundation, shake up my style-leanings a bit, but if anyone could save me from that I'd appreciate it - !

  • Audrey

I switched from Armani to YSL Youth Liberator - it's fabulous (with exception of scent with does go away). Nice, luminous coverage. Not too heavy, but more than a tinted moisturizer.

  • Caitlyn Dixon

    Ellis Faas Skin Veil.

It is incredible. Best foundation I have ever put on my face, EVER!!
It is dewy, medium coverage and gives the most luminous glow to the skin.
I always tell my clients "it looks like skin, but BETTER!
I will never do a bride or shoot without this foundation. I also love mixing it with MAC face and body foundation because it gives it a little bit more of a golden undertone as it tends to be more on the neutral to pink side.

  • Tina

The best is amore pacific's CC cream!!!!! It's so light and provides just the right amount of coverage.

  • thefatandskinny

I love anything by Black Opal. I've tried all of their foundations, and they go great with my combination African American skin. I have never gotten more compliments on face!

  • Megan Lloyd

I started using Bourjois Healthy Mix Serum (shade 53) after Lisaeldridge.com recommended it for dry complexions. It gives good coverage but still feels light and seems to last all day at work. I've also just recently bought Nars Sheer Glow (in Punjab) after I had my makeup done. It is thicker which I'm getting used to but I really like the look, especially at night.

  • Nina

Dr. Jart's BB Premium Beauty Balm. It's not really a foundation, but it covers enough of the redness in my face and it doesn't look like I'm wearing makeup. It leaves my skin a little dewy and never cakes even by the end of the day. Good stuff!

  • disqus_NywCoMxKkT

According to that ridiculously over-cited Gladwell book, success in any field comes with practicing a task for 10,000 hours. I have spent at least that amount of time on the pursuit of the right foundation so I feel as if I could perhaps contribute something to this discussion. Point is, my bathroom cabinet is currently home to Giorgio Armani Maestro; Makeup Forever HD foundation; Makeup Forever Pro Finish; YSL Le Teint Touche Eclat; Chanel Vitalumiere Aqua; Mac Studio Sculpt; Benefit Hello Flawless Oxygen Wow (I'm not certain if that's its description or moniker) and that is not to mention the many others I have purchased over the years. I actually had to just pull them out to write this as I would barely be sure what was in there anyway. I have relatively normal skin, the sort of skin that would most likely benefit from three months without foundation smeared on to my face each morning but I just am a little (read: overly) obsessed with that dewy youthful glow that, at 26, seems to be a thing of the past.
Ugh, I apologise for the missive, I'll get to the point. I made a relatively new purchase which I feel as if I should share because I have tried and tested it for four (4!) weeks and it works particularly well on my normal, combination, dry skin - no idea really, what does any of that mean unless you are firmly placed on either end of the scale (even my dermatologist finds it all a bit ludicrous) ah, again, I got lost... my favourite foundation, the sort of in depth conversation I am too embarrassed to have in real life but am really enjoying this forum - thanks guys! Is... Kate Somerville CC Cream, it's absolutely wonderful, the ingredient list is a bit scary (sometimes I wish I had done more chemistry), and I'd suggest ignoring the name unless you are well versed on the cc, dd, bb thing, but it is honestly the best stuff I have slathered on my skin in ages. It hasn't caused any congestion, it lasts a while, it's 'glowy'. What else do people look for in a foundation? It has great coverage! Okay, well I hope this helped someone...

  • Lisa

Also not technically a foundation. I've been using Origin's VitaZing moisturiser with sheer tint that mimics the natural colour of your skin for about a month now and I will never buy a summer foundation again. The product is light, smells delicious and creates a soft, smooth, colour-corrected finish without any cake-y-ness whatsoever. It's a little on the pricey side for a dinky tube but for readers who strive for an almost 100% natural-looking finish with added benefits like radiance-boosting and extreme hydration this is the perfect product. Great for summer.

  • Aurore

Lingerie de peau By Guerlain is the best for me...

  • capriciouscat

My favorite foundation is a toss-up between Shu Uemura's Face Architect (usually mixed with a tad of MAC lustre drops) and MUFE's Face and Body foundation. The Shu foundation is so beautiful and makes skin look flawless, lasts very well and their colors are pretty good. The MUFE is the best in effortless and really looks like your skin and the lasting power is incredible, and it never looks oily even if I can go through 5 blotting sheets. I like the Shu for year round and the MUFE for summer. Unfortunately MUFE doesn't make a shade light yellow enough for me since I started wearing sunblock regularly (years ago) and I still mourn the fact. Been using PTR's CC Cream lately and it's great for a quick everyday face especially with the high SPF but it's not the same.

  • kaysibee

mix up jouer tinted moisturizer and dr. jart bb cream, perfect sheer coverage that's buildable with a high spf and beneficial ingredients!

  • Avery

Face Atelier! It's the closest thing I have found to giving flawless coverage while still looking like skin. It has a beautiful dewy finish. Just powder where necessary (if you're not into dewy)

  • corina

Have ya'll (southern girl here) tried Ellis Faas skin veil? It's fabulous - covers well yet looks natural and feels totally weightless. The bottle is a better deal but I like the click pen better!

  • Manoela Meirelles

I think that right now, my go to is a mix of Face & Body, by M.A.C, with Perfection Lumiere by Chanel, or Teint Miracle, by Lancôme. It gives that perfect dewy look, thanks to Face & Body, but it also illuminates and leaves flawless skin, because of the other two.

  • A Karina Zatarain

I'm insanely jealous of everyone who uses drugstore makeup! For foundation at least, I can't go with anything cheap, none of them look or feel right to me. Chanel Vitalumiere satin smoothing fluid makeup #30 is the best foundation I've ever tried. I hate to look matte and for my dry skin, many many moisturizers and this foundation is the best formula.

  • MelloZee

Laura Mercier's Tinted Moisturizer taught me that it's possible to achieve even skin tone.

  • Anna

Lumene bb (light) for daytime and estee lauder double wear formula for evenings. I have close to 500 foundations but these two never fail me.

  • Sabrina

Revlon's Colorstay for oily skin it's just perfect and covers my acne-prone skin without breaking me out or getting my face oily or shiny

  • Steph

YSL touche éclat is to dieeeee for
