  • ITGLacey

I'm a big fan of Kiehl's Ultra Facial Moisturizer (http://into.gl/1b6xv9J)! It's light but hydrating, absorbs really well thanks to the squalane in it, & doesn't clog my pores at all...

    • Olivia

I agree Lacey! I use the Ultra Cream, and I have been for about 3 years. it's amazing.

    • Anastasia Folorunso

This used to be my go to every winter until this year when my skin went from combination to oil slick. Now I swear by Kiehl's Rare Earth pore minimizing lotion, no blotting papers required.

      • Alison

Yes! Rare Earth pore minimizing lotion by Kiehl's is the way to go- I use it year round for my oily/ combo skin. It's not drying at all, and my skin is smooth and shine free. I wear it as-is or along with a tinted moisturizer.

  • Liz Stark

My favorite moisturizer under $40 is the L'Oreal Paris Youth Code Day/Night Cream.

  • Heather

This stuff works wonder! Actually every single product works wonders http://www.pratimaskincare.com/rejuvenating-pearl-cream

    • eastvillagesiren

agreed! just bought the pearl cream for the cold weather. the pearl powder give your face a subdued glow that seems to even out everything.

    • Liz

      Pratima products are AMAZING

  • ITGElizabeth

I'm all about the Embryoliise! It's great for my very sensitive and dry skin. A must for the cooler weather

    • D

I love Embryolisse, even with my oily and acne prone skin it's fantastic.

      • Shani

That's really good to know. I've read so much about it, but I was afraid to try it with my oily skin. Thanks!

        • MelloZee

Same, I read that it could be oily. I've been developing combination skin lately, so I guess I'll have to consider the really moisturizing stuff, too.

    • Kira

Embryolisse is the best. I have combination oily/dry skin and it leaves my face feeling moisturized but never greasy.

  • Amanda Raponi

In the summer I use Kiehl's Ultra Facial Oil-Free Lotion, it's light but hydrating and doesn't feel like it just sits on your face all day in the heat http://www.kiehls.ca/Ultra-Facial-Oil-Free-Lotion/1002,default,pd.html?start=1&cgid=ultra-facial-oil-free

  • Heather

Pratima Rejuvenating Pearl Cream. skin cream crack! http://www.pratimaskincare.com/rejuvenating-pearl-cream

  • http://taliashulze.com/ Talia Shulze

Derma E refining vitamin A cream. It has sunflower oil in it which my skin seems to like, and spreads out really well. I use it all over and put it in a Go Tube so I don't have to dip my fingers in to the tub I read somewhere that tubes are more hygienic.

  • m

    coconut oil

    • Anna Maria V Turcato

      Yesss!!!!

  • Chelsea

TriDerma Facial Redness Repair and Hada Labo Tokyo Roplenishing Hydrator!

  • bluesky557

I might have to give that a try. Everything makes me break out, especially the type of rich moisturizers they tend to recommend here on ITG. Not everyone has super dry skin!

    • Chelsea van den Berg

You must try coconut oil, and don't get put off about the 'oil' part, surprisingly oil for oily or acne-prone skin is a saviour - and I'm speaking from experience!

  • ITGMackenzie

I, too, kneel at the altar of Embryolisse! It's so hydrating. I find that my skin absorbs it best right out of the shower, when my face is still steamy. Then I ride that hyper-moisturized glow all day.

  • http://www.sarahwithmoxie.com/ Sarah Martinez

I use EltaMD 'melting' cream every night! You have to apply it while your skin is damp so it sinks in nicely. I don't wash my face in the AM, then.

    • ITGLacey

I hear such good things about this! Any other recommendations with it/people you think it might be better for, if you don't mind my asking?

      • http://www.sarahwithmoxie.com/ Sarah Martinez

Hi Lacey, it's a pretty rich product. But with that being said, I'm a previous Accutane user - and am always wary of the next break out - and it has not aggravated my face at all. In fact, since I simplified my routine, it's only made my skin nicer. I'd say my skin is typically combo with dry cheeks though. I like to apply it after I use my PTR unwrinkle peel pads at night, while my face is still slightly damp from rinsing the product off.

  • Marleen

Dr Hauschka Rose Cream for winter, for other seasons Dr Hauschka Melissa/Quince or Rose Light Cream. Love this natural skin care.

    http://onadailybeautybasis.blogspot.nl/

  • Amanda Leigh

Trader Joe's Antioxidant Facial Moisturizer, http://www.traderjoes.com/fearless-flyer/article.asp?article_id=1052, and it's only $5.99! Not too heavy, not too light.

  • Randi Millman-Brown

I love Crabtree & Evelyn's Gardeners Hand Therapy but I read somewhere they are discontinuing it...the best hand lotion ever.

  • A Karina Zatarain

    Clinique dramatically different moisturizing lotion!

    • Elvia Luciana Angulo Magallón

      ;)

  • j7a27h

La Roche Posay Effaclar Matte (daily) and Embryolisse or Cetaphil for winter--no breakouts and no oiliness later in the day.

    • sara

I've been using LRP Matte, I love it. I wear it over Derma-e Hyaluronic Acid serum, when I move back to the US in January I'll probably have to switch to something richer/heavier.

  • Nicole

La Roche Posay Toleriane Riche Facial Cream is the ONLY thing that saves my skin in the fall/winter/spring. Come summer I switch over to Toleriane Ultra.

    • http://blacknyx.tumblr.com/ BlackNyx

Totally agree - this moisturizer is so good! I just discovered it a few months ago.

    • maashmaah

Yes! I just started using their Hydreane line too (UV protection in the morning) and it's just as great.

    • michelle

The BEST for cold, dry Colorado winters!!! I use with Argan or Maracuja oil on top in winter.

    • murt

I like the cleanser from this line - the creamy one.

    • angela

i just recently purchased La Roche Posay Toleriane Facial Cream and i love it! i have sensitive--but not acne prone--and normal-combo skin (which leans towards normal-dry in winter). i'm simultaneously using Toleriane Ultra around my nose and above my lip as they tend to get dry and flaky -- but no longer thanks to this product! so far i'm loving french pharmacy products! :)

  • Crystal

Embryolisse Hydra-mat Emulsion for the summer months for my oily T-zone (combo skin) and Lait-Creme Concentre for the drying months! I also use Ole Henriksen sheer transformation for Vitamin C at night time and it is lovely!

  • http://dieucrealafemme.blogspot.com/2013/07/rebel-jeans_4.html?spref=bl marilyn rottersman

Boots Organic Face Hydrating Day Cream (at Target)- better than many much pricier ones (ex. Obagi). Great for use with Retin A!

  • http://www.twitter.com/maisonandmode Belle

I love Clinique's Dramatically Different Moisturizing Gel. It's nice and lightweight, absorbs quickly, and doesn't leave a greasy feeling behind for my combo skin.

  • keeks1225

    Arcona Magic White Ice

  • katials

nothing beats Eucerine daily protection moisturizer. just enough sun protection and just enough moisture. also a bottle will last you 6 months so score.

  • http://BikePretty.com/ Bike Pretty

First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Cream--The best thing for treating my dry patches. It's so good that I forget to use it sometimes. I just think, "my skin is fine now." Big mistake!

    • femme_noir

Same! It's great for my sensitive skin.

  • Jennifer Blakney

Coconut oil, Nutiva specifically. Makes my face, as well as my whole body, suuuuper smooth.

  • Casey

Weleda soothing almond moisturizer for sensitive skin

    • zebraAG

esp. amazing because it's even great for OILY sensitive skin - they make it in a lotion and a cream. Lotion for oily, cream for dry.

  • Catheline

I love Lush's cosmetic lad (for autumn/winter that is) - it's actually for guys but is great for girls too I think!

  • http://rolalaloves.blogspot.com/ Rowena @ rolala loves

Avene Skin Recovery Cream at $32. It's ultra moisturizing and soothing.

  • shirin

La Roche Posay Effelkar Duo and Effelkar K

  • Sarah

Right now, my favorite is Kiss my face Ultra Moisturizer Under Age.

  • haleyboyd

weleda pomegranate firming day cream as per Liv Tyler's rec. sooooo good!

    • LauraCate

AND their Skin Food! Great mostly on hands, elbows, etc, but even sparingly on the face in the fall and winter months. I thought it might feel to oil-heavy, but its sinks in and glows.

  • glamazon56

My favorite daily moisturizer is Elta Clear spf 46. It was recommended by my dermatologist and I have been buying it on Amazon ever since. It has a high spf to banish dark spots (I was a bad bad girl!) but is light enough to keep me breakout free. The product lasts and lasts and I love it oh so much!

  • Lipstick Tracy

I love the newish Origins Ginzeng moisturizer in the orange jar. It smells divine too!

  • Lagi

I love Oil of Olay Complete. It was the first moisturizer I used at 13 and it's still my go-to over 10 years later.

  • Anna

The basic bliss one is good, especially because it's hard to find non-greasy, non-pore clogging moisturizers that have at least a little but of SPF in them... BUT it does not last long. I think it's just right under 40 usd.

  • Lydia

badger balm's "aftersun balm" is my absolute favorite. With a base consisted of organic extra-virgin olive oil, organic jojoba oil, and organic shea butter, it basically heals any cracks, sunburn, or dry patches. I also adore it's tropical warm and soothing organic essential oil blend.

  • Kady

Cetaphil! I have sensitive skin and it's the absolute best moisturizer I've used. It's fragrance free, has no harsh chemicals and doesn't leave my skin feeling oily or dry.

  • Themakeupwhoreder

Olay complete! Doesn't break me out!

  • http://www.lipssofacto.com/ Meg

Just one? Currently in love with Kiehl's Skin Rescuer Anti-Stress.

Also really rate Dr. Hauschka Melissa Day Cream, La Roche-Posay Effeclar M and Pai Geranium and Thistle.

All seem A-OK for my sensitive-combination skin.

    • Amanda

      Looooove Skin Rescuer

  • Badedasforever

I've read ITG for years, but have never commented before. I have two moisturizers that COMBINED are less than forty dollars. I use Avene Skin Recovery Cream, great for rosacea. To help stretch out my Avene supply, I supplement it with Complex 15. I'm commenting because I never see Complex 15 mentioned anywhere, even though it's a cheap, fragrance-free
    option easily purchased online.

    • ITGLacey

This is so awesome! Welcome to the commentariat & thank you for introducing us to Complex 15—I want to check it out now!

    • sarah

I love Complex 15 too! I'm always surprised that it is never mentioned, it really is wonderful.

  • Alyssa Gapske

I swear by Olay's Complete All day moisturizer for day and their deep hydration regenerating moisturizer for night. Never leaves me greasy, and I've NEVER gotten a sunburn wearing the daytime moisturizer.

  • Laura

Mario Badesco Oil Free Moisturizer with 30 SPF! It's light weight and I like it because even though it's oil free it still gives a nice sheen and has SPF 30! I love all his products.

  • softy

caudalie premieres vendages moisturizing cream. i used to use the more expensive pulpe vitaminee, but i honestly can't tell the difference.

    • Crystal

I have this one and I liked it because it was smooth and smelled nice and clean but I didn't finish it before I started using Embryolisse. I think it might be better for drier skin.

  • Chloe

Nivea happy time body lotion (it smells like an orange cremsicle and makes me extremely happy) but also Weleda skin food always feels good (sometimes I just use if on dry patches like my elbows or chin)

  • Nicole Miazgowicz

Egyptian Magic. It has completely changed my skin, I rarely get dry or flaky anymore and it's definitely helped with blemishes/acne because my skin is always so moisturized. I only use it at night, unless I notice I'm a little more dry than usual--in that case, I'll spot use it in the morning.

  • caitlin

La Roche-Posay anything, but particularly the Toleriane Facial Fluid (summer/spring/fall) or the Toleriane Riche Facial Cream (winter) - lifesavers for sensitive skin!

  • Geovanna Morcelli

    La Roche Posay Effaclar Mat

  • missdosays

Clinique Dramatically Different Moisturizing Gel! Lightweight, non-greasy, and very moisturizing. $26.

  • Verdun

    Embryolisse!

  • Zhan

    Almost moisturizer from Avene

  • ddbddb

Cetaphil Restoraderm. I have very sensitive, eczema-prone skin, and this stuff has been magic. Also, it's available at the drug store and under $15.

  • Taylor

La Roche Posay Lipikar! This stuff is good to the last drop.

  • Meaghan Gatchell

Kiehls Skin Rescuer, Best Year round Lotion for all Skin Issues!
    http://www.kiehls.ca/skin-rescuer/1064,default,pd.html?start=4&cgid=face-moisturizers

  • BarbieNoe

    I love

  • BarbieNoe

I love MAC's Strobe Cream. It's light, not greasy, and gives me a glow even on the greyest of days. And for a whopping $32, its light on the wallet too

  • Terra

I'm all about Aveda Botanical Kinetics. The smell is light and earthy. Having brought a bottle backpacking across Europe, I can attest to the pump's better-than-most lock switch.

I'm from Canada and recommend fellow canucks pick it up on their next trip south of the border — at least $10 cheaper there.

  • Jane T.

I just started using Shiseido's Ibuki line and while the day and night moisturizers are 45 apiece (only five over the limit!), they are worth every penny. They are so lightweight and silky and my skin is looking on point ever since I started them. You could probably get away with using the night moisturizer in the daytime if you added an SPF serum or something as well.

  • Georgia Angelidou

Korres Wild Rose 24h moisturising cream and La Roche Posay Hydraphase Intense Riche. First one I buy for 27.90 euros and the other one for 14.50 euros. I always choose cheaper moisturisers because, not only they work wonders for my skin, but I also apply it everyday without worrying if soon I will run out and "Oh dear God, I need another 60 euros to buy me a new one".

    • BubblyDiva

I'm with you on the La Roche Posay Hydraphase - it's great for dry, sensitive skin, because it not only moisturezes, but over time actually "heals" your skin, making it less dry. I also love Boots Botanics Day Moisture Lotion with honey and rice extract, it's only like $6, but it works wonders - my skin looks plump and glowing.

  • Lucy

CeraVe PM at night! I am on acne topicals and it keeps my skin from flaking off and is great lightly applied around the eye area as a super moisturizing eye cream. And then in the AM I use Clinique Dramatically Different Moisturizing gel....the gel formula keeps my face from getting too oily and my makeup sliding off by lunch. Perfect combo for girls with combo skin that need moisture at night but don't want to be a greaseball during the day.

  • http://www.madame-ostrich.com/ Madame Ostrich

I've been using Eucerin's Daily Protection moisturizer every day for the past 13 years. I could bathe in it. Seriously.

  • Jen

CeraVe in the giant tub and jojoba oil.

  • Andrea

At night I use Egyptian Magic or Grapeseed oil. During the day I use Mario Badescu's Collagen moisturizer with spf 15

  • Sally Lyndley

Obsessed with Bee Yummy Skin Food $39, anti aging and anti blemish. All natural too.

    • Julie

Obsessed is a good word for this stuff. Could eat it too!

      • Robin

Tell me more! Is it really so worth it?

        • Sally Lyndley

I started using it last week and I love it. I am in my mid 30's and still have acne, but I am also crazy about finding no silicone products. This is the best moisturizer I have found that heals my acne, doesn't cause more pimples and is anti aging for my wrinkles. Like I said obsessed.

          • Robin

I've heard horror stories about people loving it for a few weeks, until things go awry. Then, acne breakouts, clogged pores, and dryness ensue. I hope this isn't true!

          • Chesley

It's not true. I'm about to finish my first jar. (First moisturizer I'll have used up- ever). I'm in my mid 20s with hormonal breakouts and it heals my skin overnight.

  • KT

Obviously Clinique Dramatically Different which I think is around $29AUD now or Clarins Daily Energizer Cream which is a little bit more luxurious and I love the smell of. It's around $35ish I believe. I always come back to these two.

  • ITGNick

What about for guys? What do you/your boy-friends use?

    • Zeno

Hey Nick! I'm a guy and I use Kate Somerville Oil Free Moisturizer, which is a little more expensive. It is so good for my skin, it perfectly melts and leaves you a matte finish.
Amore Pacific tinted moisturizer is probably one of the best product I've ever tried, but again is over $40, sorry!
Under 40$ I would say everything La Roche Posay does, I trust all of their products.

    • tamgerines

my favorite is kiehl's ultra facial cream (even compared to pricier options!). after seeing it sitting around the apartment, my boyfriend started stealing some and now it's his favorite as well.

      • Amanda Raponi

        My husband uses this too

        • Anna Maria V Turcato

My boyfriend uses Weleda Skin Food: smells so good!!!!

    • Holly

My boyfriend has started using Embryolisse because I use it all the time -- but when it's only me around, he also sneaks my Nuxe Huile Prodigieuse and Mustela body cream, all of which I wear all the time and recommend enthusiastically. The Nuxe and Mustela smell a bit too much like flowers and babies for most guys to use much of, though.

    • NeenaJ

Whatever I have extra of - currently, it's Avene Clear A/C.

    • megm115

I had to fight to get my bf to moisturize on the daily - aside from being a sunscreen Nazi, I was tired of seeing little flakes and redness around his "scruff." After lots of tries, I found that he loves Garnier Ultra-Lift Anti-Wrinkle Firming Moisturizer SPF 15. It sounds intense but it's just rich enough without being greasy, the retinol takes care of any flakes/ingrowns, especially for guys with facial hair of the coarser variety, the smell isn't offensive and the pump is easy to use and sanitary. Surprising winner.

    • Jessica Lai

He uses Amaris Botanicals Day-Dew Face Moisturiser and actually turned me on to this line.

  • Alison

La Roche Posay Toleraine Ultra. The BEST!

  • Kelly

Aveeno Positively Radiant Moisturizer SPF 30! It gives your skin a glow plus includes sun protection.

  • Fevi

Virgin coconut oil moisturizes the crap out of my skin like nobody's business

  • Julie Bogen

    Clinique Dramatically Different Moisturizing Gel!

  • natasha

I like the Nuxe anti stress moisturizer!

  • Ashleigh

My dermatologist recommended this. It truly is a amazing no fuss moisturizer for my acne prone skin.

  • SW

I had the worst combo - acne prone and dry skin. After trying every brand under the sun including pricey fixes like La Mer, La Prairie, Sk-ii as well as many other concoctions and strange home remedie recommended by well meaning skin enthusiasts I took a shot on Cerave moisturizing cream and it is amazing. Cured my dehydrated skin and left me gloriously acne free.
    Problem solved. For $15. Hallelujah.

  • http://www.svegablog.blogspot.ca/ Dejana S

Neutrogena Naturals Multi Vitamin Nourishing Moisturizer
no silicone, non greasy, perfect for under makeup. The only moisturizer I keep repurchasing.

  • ikillplants

Boscia Revitalizing Black Hydration Gel. Disturbing name, creepy color, AMAZING FOR YOUR SKIN. Sorry about the caps, but that's how strongly I feel about this product! My pores have literally shrunk since I first started using the gel, and the consistency is comforting and absorbs quickly (I gots the oily skin). There are multiple amazing things in the ingredients, like charcoal. I'm actually surprised this gel moisturizer and its companion cleanser haven't received love on ITG before.

  • http://anothermagpie.tumblr.com/ magpie

Toss up between embryolisse and Grown Alchemist hydrating cream. Embryolisse for the good old priming/moisturizing/makeup remover combo; grown alchemist for real moisturizing. If you haven't heard about the latter (and you haven't), seriously, get on it, ITG. You have been warned.

  • therealblonde

Anything Avène. Every other night I use their Eluage (26 euros), the only retinoid my skin tolerates. When my skin is upset or dehydrated, their Cicalfate (9 euros) is a LIFE SAVER, it also gives such a nice glow. And for day, the Tolerance SPF 20 (either Rich or Light, depending on the season and my skin needs - 20 euros).

  • Brittnee KAO

My favorite is the Control Corrective brand Calming Balm! It's amazing! I have a review on my blog if anyone wants to check it out - http://beautyproductaday.blogspot.com/2013/11/control-corrective-calming-balm.html. Really really good for irritated or sensative skin.

  • jordana m

I've been a medical esthi for 10+ years and i get this question ALL the time! heres my criteria: little to no fragrance, no jars EVER, state of the art ingredients, and no known irritants! best under $40: most olay creams fit the bill, ceraVe pm, dennis gross age erase, clinique super rescue, and boscia restorative.

  • SM

I swear by Body Shop's Vitamin E face cream, have been using it for years. Sells for $18 a pot. I find it really simple, light, absorbs easily, and, at least for me, it seems to work like magic, giving my skin a glow whenever I use it. I moisturize my face morning/evening with it, and I also use it to add a glow if I feel I'm looking chalky. I've tried various other creams over the years (esp Clinique's Dramatically Different and Origins Starting Over, but I keep coming back to the Body Shop/Vitamin E, which really seems to work and feel better for my skin.
I do wonder if perhaps our skins get "used" to a certain cream (and god knows what chemicals) and that's why we prefer them over new creams? .
Oh, I also use Simpler's Organics Argan Oil, in addition to the Body Shop Vitamin E cream, at night. These two things are my life savers.

  • Kat

Embryolisse lait-creme concentre! ITG preached the good word about this gem. I rest on the Sabbath with a bottle of pure jojoba oil. It's so inexpensive and feels dreamy...

For my hands there has never been a better choice than Neutrogena Hand Cream. I've used it for 13 years now and will probably use it for the next 75 (good genes).

  • Emma

I totally agree with CeraVe. I don't use the PM one, just the plain as hell one. I used to have really bad skin issues (acne caused by overly dry skin. It has a name, but it's long and I forgot it immediately after my dermatologist said it), and the only thing that cured it was switching to CeraVe cleanser and moisturizer. Healing and glow-ifying, for sure.

  • Anna

S.W. Basics has this makeup remover oil that actually makes a great moisturizer. When all my makeup has been removed, I just massage the oil into my face and let it soak in. Good stuff! Lately I've just started using it as my night moisturizer whether I have makeup to remove or not! It works better than my pricy anti-aging night cream, it costs a fraction of the price, and it has only three ingredients (almond oil, olive oil & jojoba oil).
I've also been known to just slather my face with straight olive oil--freakish, but it does amazing things for your skin!

  • Juicy Tux

Hydrance Optimale UV Riche by Avène.
It also exists in a light version and/or without sun protection

  • Léopoldine

HYDRANCE OPTIMALE from AVENE (light or rich, depends of what I need..) Sometimes I try other things, but this moisturizer is THE moisturizer, it's like a cosy blanket for your face. Absolutely non greasy (even for mixt skin), it's just the perfect hydration and quench for your tired skin (summer and winter !) When I get to bed with it, my skin says thanks you :)

    • Cat

      Yes to this. THE BEST.

  • Anne

This is great! Right now I'm using Kiehls Ultra Facial Moisturizer, but can't wait to try out Embryolisse and Mario Badescu now... I use a lot of La Roche Posay skin products, but actually never tried their moisturizers. Man I have some skin care catching up to do! Oh, and I'd really like to know what ITG (readers) favorite foundations are, since that's always a bit of a struggle for me...

  • Nicole H

I've been loving La Roche-Posay Effaclar Duo for a couple months, but I've switched just so my skin doesn't get too used to it. Not the most hydrating but perfectly adequate for my oily skin!

  • MGF

    Hydrazone by Guinot!
    perfect balance

    • casey23

      Def on my try list!

  • Babou

Oil of Olay Total Effects unscented, no spf !!!!!

I stock up when I go to London or Canada
My mom bought it and my step dad started putting it on his psoriasis (like, he takes chichever moisturizer he finds in the bathroom), with great results, so I tried it despite my sensitive skin and I loved it : moisturized and plump skin, very comfortable and no reaction

Good for day (does not make makeup runny) or night, hygenic packaging, low price...
La Roche Posay also makes very good ones that my bf likes too (minimal packaging)

  • disqus_XIxHJslPUz

I would say aloe vera. It's cheap - usually around £10 here in the UK- and incredibly efficient.
Avène is pretty good too and smells lovely (I especially like the mask.)

  • http://www.styleplayground.com/ Axelle Blanpain

I love Yu Be moisturizer for extreme conditions -read ski holidays or freezy temperatures in Belgium. Otherwise, I love the Lait crème concentré from Embryolisse as well as Kielh's ultra facial moisturizer.

  • YYCC

I don't understand the whole hype around Embryolisse. Top two ingredients there are Water Paraffinum Liquidum (Mineral Oil). Maybe people with young and good skin can use it but anyone who has acne or sensitive skin, or rosacea, or is prone to millia (hard white zits) are recommended to stay away from it. I've tried it too. You can definitely tell, by the texture, that mineral oil is one of the top ingredients.

    • casey23

The same goes for Avene Skin Recovery Cream (mineral oil in the top) as well but people seem to like it..

  • http://www.mischkebusiness.com/ Anna Mischke

Avene Cold Cream. It's water based formula sinks into the skin quickly, perfect for the Cambodian climate and the light yet luxuriously thick cream imparts a faint lily scent. Also, it's one of the only decent NON WHITENING moisturizers I've been able to find in the country.

  • Becky

Cicalfate by Avène. It's amazing, inexpensive and calms down my skin. It's very rich and heavy, so I only use it at night - but it's frikkin magic in a tube. Calms, heals and protects. Gorgeous product.

I use Embryollise ALL of the time. When I walk or run in the cold New England weather during winter, I put this cream on on top of my sunscreen before I go out. I also wear it to bed..even under my eyes.

But for my under $40? I have a million dollar stash of beauty stuff in my house but my favorite face cream that I use every single solitary day is:

Olay Complete Defense Daily UV Moisturizer SPF 30. 30! It's for sensitive skin.

I never ever break out and I have sun protection with NO -benzones (avobenzone, etc). The BEST. I love it. I cannot live without it. And it's $12!

  • Christine Calvo

dr. hauschka rose day cream! I normally use darphin's intral moisturizer which costs around $70, but if am looking to spend a little less, or change up my routine, i find dr.hauschka's to be equally as soothing and moisturizing. plus, it's natural and organic.

  • Aurora

Avene Hydrance Optimale Light Hydrating Cream. Hydrating but not greasy. Isabelle Bellis recommended it to me as an affordable, paraben-free moisturizer without alcohol!

I started using the Clearogen Sulfur Acne Lotion to clear up my skin... and it is a MIRACLE WORKER. It is strong, but it doesn't dry your skin out and gives you quick results.

I make my own -- a mixture of bulgarian rose oil, apricot seed oil, and avocado oil. I go to one of the best facialists in Boston who could easily sell me his products, but he says what I'm doing is great. (As an aside, I also wash my hair -- 90% of the time -- with baking soda as "shampoo" and apple cider vinegar as "conditioner," and my hairdresser always tells me my hair feels so healthy. He knows about my routine and says keep it up.) I like my beauty products to be simple, natural & effective.

Avene Clean-AC Hydrating Cream. I'm a teenager and I used to have some bad hyperpigmentation on my cheeks. To get rid of it my dermatologist gave me a retinoid but it really dried my skin out and all my moisturizers started to burn my skin when I used them. This moisturizer is made to be used alongside acne care to repair the damage it does to your skin. It's amazing!

  • dana

Avene Hydrance Optimale SPF 25 Hydrating Cream is THE best I've ever tried and I've tried many (well, the optimist in me sticks either to high-end or natural) A beautiful, light cream that makes you glowy and hydrated and the SPF does not show at all, in real life or in photographs. Well under $40.

  • http://taliashulze.com/ Talia Shulze

Retinol is a very potent form of Vitamin A, so yeah that was basically my logic. I didn't really start moisturizing every night until I got my Clarisonic. I think without the Derma E cream my skin would be really really dry. It's good for the price too and is rather basic, I like that it's relatively 'natural' and probably cheaper than what I'd pay for a top shelf drugstore brand.

  • lou B

Dr hauscka rose day cream is amazing. Works all year round for me.

La Roche-Posay Cicaplast Baume B5. It's so good! I'm combo skin prone to breakouts and patches of dryness and this stuff beats all I've ever used.

Right now I'm loving the La Roche-Posay Toleriane Ultra it soaks right in/not greasy and the Elta Broad Spectum 40 SPF moisturizer.
At Night I have been using the Dr. Haushka face oil, which smell so good and absorbs quickly into my skin.

Origins' A Perfect World SPF 25.

Might be a wee bit over $40, but as a penny pinching young professional it's one splurge I never second guess. It shielded my skin for a sun drenched week in Palm Springs, leaves a soft and supple feeling and smells nice! The 50ml pot lasts me a good four months.

  • GlitterSaves

I have dry sensitive skin and really like First Aid Beauty's Ultra Repair Cream ($28 bucks for a HUGE 6 oz tub). It's great for calming redness and irritation, dries fairly matte while still being quite moisturizing, and works very well. In deep winter I do sometimes need a little more moisture thanks to the cold & indoor heating, but it's better than anything else I've found.

  • Aubrey Green

    I also use this.

  • Anon anon

A spritz of NaPCA followed by a thick layer of safflower oil (Hollywood with extra E).
The best and does not leave the nasty smell on clothes that coconut oil does (the residue turns rancid I notice).

  • Aubrey Green

I used this for years and was ALWAYS getting compliments on my skin. I think it really does make your skin more radiant - this is coming from someone who has used accutane twice too. I don't know why I stopped using it. Thanks for the reminder.

  • karen to

Coconut oil every night. It's all natural, moisturizing, doesn't cause break outs and it's so cheap!! Doesn't get any better than that. As I've gotten older, I've realized being less harsh on my skin is better.

Started using jojoba oil a several years ago, which BANISHED my acne. Now that I follow it up with raw/organic/unrefined/pure/perfect African shea butter from Butters-N-Bars.com, I can't help but look at all these moisturizers - even Avene and La Roche stuff! - and sort of feel like, "What's the point?" Aren't they all just full of random filler anyway? I almost want to go back to just the jojoba oil - my skin was perfect at the time.

For all people struggling with combination skin which is prone to acne, people with dry, sensitive or better yet normal skin - coconut oil saved my life.

Seriously, after using "Cold Pressed Coconut oil" on my face at night my sensitive acne prone skin is loving me! Yes you can't wear it during the day (imagine going outside with oil on your face - lobster material!) because your make-up will slide off. But my skin feels ever-so soft, moisturised and hydrated. Seriously get with the hype and give it a go - amazing!

Nuance Renewed Radiance Nutrifying Night Cream by Salma Hayek. It's kinda thick, but absorbs quickly and doesn't feel greasy, has a nice fragrance, and left my dry skin feeling smooth by morning. I ran out of my usual $125 Erno Laszlo R.E.M night cream and used this one for a couple weeks and it performed just as well. Not a bad deal for $14!

  • Jez

Alpha Hydrox Soufflé. It's amazeballs, and I am so not the type of person that ever says amazeballs. Keeps my pores clear and dare I say luminous? I discovered this a year ago and I'm still so impressed. It has 12% glycolix acid and is around $17 in US. Best of all it works as well in the climate of Denver as it does in California. I use this at night and BurnOut's clean and clear Zinc-based sunscreen every morning, and I finally have pretty skin that doesn't need foundation (just concealer for dark under eye circles, curse them!).

  • Dimanne

Korres! I would give one of my arms for a jar of the Pomegranate gel - if it comes to that.

  • Sarah A

I have to love La Roche-Posay Effaclar H. It gives my skin a lot of moisture but doesn't feel heavy or greasy. It also soothes my skin and doesn't cause any breakouts.

  • hclsaltaicd

Dr Hauschka makes the best - Rose or Melissa or whatever your skin type is. It's about 18,50€ but in the US, it was like $45... Good thing, I live in Europe.

  • Kim

I love Human Heart Nature Sunflower Oil. It is 100% all-natural and it has so many uses (i.e., face, hair, and body moisturizer, etc.). It works wonders for your stretchmarks, pimple scars and your underarms. Also, I also like the good ol' coconut oil. The 'oil' on the label might have turned me off at first (as I am oily) but I realized that both my sunflower oil and coconut oil do not just make me glow but they do moisturize my skin really well, I mean, my skin tends to be so soft and whenever I try to "scratch" it, there are no traces of dryness manifested by that white line that follows the scratching.

Two creams, together just over $40 if you get the 2 oz Egyptian Magic, which is magical for dry skin, just olive oil, beeswax, honey, propolis and pollen (and be forewarned, it's greasy); and Andalou Naturals Resveratrol Q10 Night Repair Cream with fruit stem cell science. It has a wonderful faint smell of cocoa butter, and is totally non-greasy.

  • Lana

I use, and adore, my Pai Rosehip BioRegenerate Oil. I use it on the daily, every morning after I wash my face. Depending on how my skin feels, or how hot it'll be that day, I may or may not add a moisturizer before my face primer. I love that Pai is extremely natural, and a little goes such a long way! Two drops for my face and one for my neck and I am on my way. xx

    They are all from ROC:
Retinol Correxion Deep Wrinkle Repair Night Cream
    Retinol Correxion Deep Wrinkle Serum
Multi Correxion 5 in 1 Night Cream

Why? Because they really work and they are all affordable. I layer the 5 in 1 cream over either the Deep Wrinkle Repair cream or the serum. I have been alternating between the first two for over a year now, and just introduced the 5 in 1. I had a very deep wrinkle in my forehead (to the point where I was on the verge of Botox) that is now nearly invisible. I have also noticed more even skin tone and improved hydration. I am very pleased with these products.

I've been liking stuff from Skinactives lately - I mix 2/3rds of the European cream with 1/3rd Sea Kelp Coral. It absorbs really fast and my skin is looking smoother.

As a moisturiser I use rose water to hydrate my skin, adding a spray cap to the top. It sprays a nice mist and keeps me hydrated throughout the day. It's organic, so no chemical additives are a plus! The 200 ml bottle was 18 dollars, and it lasts a long time!

  • migo

  • lulu

So much CeraVe love!! I just use the moisturizer in a tub, pretty sure it's meant for the body but it doesn't break me out and it's about $15.00. That coupled with my $16.99 bottle of Baobab oil and Pond's cold cream to remove makeup has gotten rid of the irritation nation on my face. I use a glycolic acid gel once a week and a clay mask twice a week to keep other types of acne at bay, but for the most part the no-frills routine has kept my skin in better shape than a lot of the expensive things I used to own.

  • Anne-Marie

The ONLY two moisturisers that I have found which don't give my hypersensitive skin a rash are Avene Tolerane Extreme, and the basic Aveeno Cream.
I tried Embryolisse... it was great for about a week and then the allergies kicked in. I'd love to try LIz Earle sometime, and I'm not sure if I have tried La Roche Posay Toleriane Riche already, I'll have to give it a go again to see.

My absolute favorite is Salma Hayek Nuance AM/PM Anti-Aging Super Cream. This stuff is so amazing! I use it as a night moisturizer. When you put it on, you can literally feel your face glowing and your face looks better instantly and feels super hydrated and pampered. When you wake up the next day, your face is glowing and any imperfections are minimized. I've been using it since the summer and I have really been seeing great results with my skin looking & feeling more hydrated, dark spots & hyper pigmentation fading, and fine lines decreasing just as it says it will do. You can buy it at CVS for $20 or the sample size for $5.

(PS, the Nuance eye makeup remover is the best I've ever used and only $7.
It melts off all the makeup in 1 swipe literally, it's not oily, and it makes your skin feel so hydrated.)

Neutragena Oil-Free SPF 15 with a few drops of olive oil or vitamin E oil. Sounds counterintuitive, but the lightweight formula and SPF are key while the additional oil provides all-day moisture (oil-free formulas on their own aren't moisturizing enough for me, but I prefer the texture to heavier day creams).

I put the oils in those little Muji pump bottles and feel all chemist-like every morning, which is an added bonus.

I always use Vaseline Aloe Fresh lotion with SPF 15 in the summer. It's very inexpensive, lasts a long time, gives a good amount of moisture without being too heavy in hot weather, and I don't find that it smells like sunscreen at all!

  • Peaches

I wrote a big thing here then it got lost somehow.

    Jergens Original Scented Moisturizer.
It smells of cherry and almond. It's happiness in a bottle.

I instantly feel happy and feel great whenever I use this moisturizer.

Alba Botanica Cocoa Butter for my butt cheeks :) and hips... stretch marks.

Their Body Lotion with SPF 15. During the fall I like a little SPF on my hands. There are very few hand creams with SPF in the market so I just use this body lotion as a hand lotion. Sometimes I mix both the Cocoa butter with the body lotion for my hands.

Sabon can never do you wrong. One can tell they put a lot of love in to their products. I love their simple and clean packaging. They are an all around great brand. I like their Carrot Body Lotion.

L'occitane's Angelica Eye Roll-On is $28. When I'm tired or just need a quick pick me up, I use these. I think Yes to Carrots has an Eye Roll-On product that is cheaper. I've been meaning to try it.

  • Danielle

I'm using Dr. Hauschka Moisturizing Day Cream for a while now and i've nothing to complain. It keeps my skin soft, healthy, has a nice texture and I like the smell... oh yes and I love that it's natural (as far as I know).

I had the same problem as your bf. the more i used it the more dehydrated I got. Then I read on makeupalley that moisture surge is meant to lock another moisturizer in, not stand alone. Now I use it on top of Argan oil or even embryolisse and it works so much better.

    Cerave! My dermatologist recommends!

  • bluesky557

    Haha, no. I wish.

    • Sylvie

bluesky557, it sounds like your skin might be really dehydrated, with lots of dead skin cells on top. Try using hydrosols in the morning and just oil cleansing your face (lots of tuts on Youtube) at night for a while to soften the skin. I think steaming your face and then following with a clay mask to exfoliate can be really beneficial too!

  • Cat

La Roche Posay Hydraphase Intense Light. Never heavy or greasy, but super duper hydrating (suitable for my combination skin even during the harsh canadian winters), and the smell is heavenly too. I just started using Aveeno Daily Moisturising Lotion and it's amazing! Made from oatmeal, and really really light on the skin - it doesn't make you feel oily or weighed down and adds a dewy look to your skin. love love love it.

  • Jen

I use Thayers witch hazel as a day time moisturizer. Awesome and it's natural! My skin was never one to break out but this routine completely stopped even "the one" to appear. I have extremely dry skin (I use coconut oil as my body moisturizer) and one coat of witch hazel on my skin can be just a tad bit drying. After toner I use a cotton ball to dab some witch hazel then after letting the first coat dry I then use my hands and splash some more witch hazel. Super light moisturizer for those with dry but combination skin. I save the heavy moisturizer for the evening. Just feel like if you wear make up (those darn chemicals) you should at least try to keep your skincare routine as raw as possible.

  • Anna Lina

Two drops organic, cold pressed Apricot Kernel Oil with one drop Rosehip Seed Oil. Completely natural and perfect for my acne and eczema prone face!

  • LPW

virgin coconut oil has been my go to as of late (so cheap!!), but kiehl's ultra facial cream is great, too. (around $30 I think)

  • softy

that's so funny - almost the same thing happened with my boyfriend! i got him the clinique gel moisturizer for men, but he didn't like it so i gave him my clarins hydra quench, which he loved! i didn't like it as much, but only because i'd apply sunscreen over it and the hydra quench would actually start to rub off.

  • Annie B

I definitely feel moisturized throughout the day. I live in Chicago where it is super cold and dry in the winter and this moisturizer is good all day for me. I think these things depend on your skin, but it's definitely worth a try! Mario Badescu is GREAT about samples, so I would go that route if you're not ready to commit to $26 for a bottle.

    • Marie

Thank you for your answer Annie, I will definitely try it soon!

  • rami

I love eucerin dry skin relief face cream, especially in the winter

  • Lili

I have two faves from Caudalie's Vinosource range - the Quenching sorbet (great for summer) and the Intense Moisture Rescue cream for the cold dry months of winter.

  • lia12345

When I started using my Clarisonic, my skin got really dry. Luckily, I ran out of my Juice Beauty night cream and switched over to Acure Sensitive Facial Cream--it's amazing. Works better than any other night cream I've had (and is cheaper!). It's "unscented", which works for my sensitive skin, but the salesperson told me a lot of people are bothered by the "natural" smell. Whatever, I love it. And my skin seriously has never been so soft.

(During the day, I use Andalou Ultra Sheer Daily Defense, SPF 18. Works well, but I like the extra boost of the Acure at night.)

I am currently obsessed with Dr. Brandt's Blemishes No More Oil-Free Hydrator ($35). Its super hydrating and is not greasy at all. It's very refreshing when applied.

Hauschka is awesome, but the best creams are Pai (which are just over $40!). I've repurchased the rosehip chamomile so many times. The best cheapie out there though is the Badger Rose face sunscreen. In winter, I layer it over Pai, but in the summer it's great on its own.
