The ponytail has the unfortunate reputation of being the traditional 'do of stressed-out mothers, co-eds, the occasional dirty-in-a-hot-way guy, or resident gym-rats. It's the coif of convenience as opposed to one of pre-planned and intentional style. Well, that is, until recently. Given its proliferation on the Fall 2013 runways (Alex Wang, Céline, Stella McCartney, etc), it's clear the hairstyle of yore is no longer a secret best kept between you and the laundry room. Ladies (and you dirty men), it's time to pony up.

Many of us have transitioned from complex to more understated beauty; we prefer to look makeup-free instead of makeup-caked, and this nonchalant mindset has made its way to our tresses: who needs an overworked updo when Gwyneth herself found a loose, low pony all that was necessary to complement her caped Tom Ford gown at the 2012 Oscars? You can wear it low or high, with or without a part, or, for highest impact, slicked back for clean control à la Beyonce on the cover of The Gentlewoman [6]. Sure, its fundamental appeal may be that it's an easy look to create, but don’t miss your opportunity to make your pony work a little harder, and, you know, perhaps utilize it as an extra place to display your gold cuff [22], extra hair ties [6], or a piece of tape [11]. Let's reclaim this style! Giddyup.

I agree, it's how you wear it that counts. Beyonce looks amazing like that, it really highlights her amazing eyes and bone structure.

Great inspiration! Love a look that's equally easy and chic :)

I love adding a cuff to my pony.
I think pony tails have definitely gone from lazy to chic and I love it!

I'd love to be able to rock the pony tail but I've so many little baby hairs around my hair line...

    • Leetoki

Yes! Regardless of my current micro bangs, I have so many baby hairs/hairs snapped off due to shitty amounts of bleach around my hairline. The worst.

    • MoseyM

You've got a halo! I love that look, it's so pretty.

  • Chantel

I love to wear my hair in a ponytail.

  • Kim

Love the simplicity of a ponytail!
