Johnny Depp’s latest contribution to his increasingly bizarre collection of characters debuted yesterday, with the nationwide release of The Lone Ranger. Depp plays the famous American-Indian sidekick Tonto in a costume that involves a fair amount of face paint, a headband, several feathers, and a casual crow headpiece. Yes, Johnny eases into the role seamlessly, but while his film repertoire continues to travel further down the rabbit hole of quirk (thanks in large part to his frequent collaborators, Tim Burton and Gore Verbinksi), so has his hair and makeup, both on- and off-screen. Between his turns as Willy Wonka, the Mad Hatter, Captain Jack Sparrow, and a vampire, it dawned on us: it’s been a really long time since we’ve seen Johnny Depp’s face!

OK, OK, Depp’s version of a sea-faring Keith Richards has an appeal unto itself, but why is everyone, including Johnny, himself (ahem, glasses, hat, and facial hair) covering up his million-watt mug? We're longing for the days of Johnny past when he was bare-faced and irresistible to every human being, including Winona Ryder and Kate Moss. We miss the perfectly unkempt hair. We miss the “Winona Forever” tattoo (“Wino Forever” just doesn’t have the same passion). We miss the bad-boy sultry eyes (sans liner). So, Johnny, if you’re reading this, we’ve done our best to put together a little inspiration slideshow of our favorite “you” moments. Oh, and have you seen Winona lately? She looks great. Just sayin’…

I saw Johnny Depp's "real" face just the other night. He was Charlie Rose's guest. The interview was excellent. Fifty looks very good on him. He also explained the makeup for his newest role and talked about his desire to make Tonto something more than just another mindless Native American caricature:

I appreciate the depth of his cultural literacy -- something which is becoming increasingly difficult to find, and certainly not very often in evidence on the internet.

Johnny Depp and Kate Moss are definitely the most beautiful man and woman in the world.
