No matter how "Eff societal conventions!" you are, you've thought about your wedding. Admit it. Ok? Ok. The type of person you'll marry, who'll make the cake (Cake Boss, anyone?), indoors or feet-in-the-sand, and what the hell you'd wear. It’s all about the dress (...and your partner, we guess). But that dress—there are shows dedicated to it (SYTTD), fashion empires built on it (Vera, Oscar, Monique), and many an indelible style moment because of it (Carolyn Bessette in Narciso Rodriguez, etc). It makes sense that celebs and anyone in the public eye would feel added pressure to get it right—that check from the People mag exclusive could put all of your future kids through college, and then some. Even those who opt for small, intimate, and/or private affairs, you gotta wear something. All eyes are on you and you’ll want to feel the most beautiful, the most you you've ever felt. Or, at least that is the idea.

Why have we got weddings on the brain? For one, it's that time of year... But also: the perma-chic Keira Knightley earned her fairytale moment this past weekend, marrying The Klaxons' James Righton in a town hall ceremony in Mazan, France. The low-key event was attended by ten guests and apparently included a slightly larger after-party at Knightley's nearby estate. But more importantly, her outfit: an above-the-knee blush-pink Chanel ballerina dress (that seems to have been recycled from a BAFTA party a few years ago—very Princess Kate), a classic Chanel jacket, a very Glastonbury floral crown, Wayfarers, and ballet flats. It might not fit the typical little-girl fantasy, but the newly appointed Mrs. Righton looked incredible skipping away from the ceremony [1].

Seeing Keira as a blushing bride rekindled our **memories** of other leading ladies’ big days. (One thing we learned in our research: if you want to keep it white but stray away from lace and silk, Raquel Welch and Jane Birkin make a pretty mean case for the crocheted dress.) Take a look at some of our favorite bridal moments of yesteryear and let us know some of your own.

So many of them are divorced now. Fairy tales notwithstanding.

The dress designed by Ralph Lauren for his son's wife is the most beautiful wedding dress ever! It's timeless.

  • natstar!

hands down. bestest post of all time!

Great photos! Serge and Jane never married, btw.

  • Marjaneh

  • thesixthbeatle

Keira Knightley and Carolyn Bessette wore my fave celeb wedding outfits. Both so simple and elegant, not to mention romantic.

carolyn bessette all the way! beautiful

  • Holly

Aw, James Righton looks 16 there!

  • Guest

Would have loved to see Vanessa Traina included in this! Especially since her wedding dress is almost identical to Rooney Mara's Met Gala dress.

    • dunzoo

+1. Her dress was absolutely gorgeous.

  • dunzoo

Great pics! Seems Keira's dress was Rodarte (to be confirmed by her rep). I was disppointed by her look, it was simple, but boring.
My favorites: Carolyn Bessette Kennedy and Kate Moss (the pic with the flowers girls is fab). Loved Sofia Coppola too.

    • Bee

Keira's dress was Chanel. Karl designed it for her.

  • Christina

I think Vanessa Traina's wedding dress was stunning.

I can't ever top my mom who married in a mexican lace dress and a blue velvet coat (it was a November wedding)...

Interesting to see every bride in the history of mediatic brides, but it doesn't give a sense of ITG's favorites.

  • Ona_in_Barcelona

LOVE this, and not just because I'm getting married in a few months.
Although. Mark Zuckerberg's wedding pic has always annoyed me. It's your wedding bro - get a suit and shirt that fit and learn to tie your tie!

  • Janine

My favorite everything is Carolyn Bessette...but the photo I saved and keep posted in my apartment is Plum Sykes. That gorgeous McQueen. That photo is unbelievably beautiful and the dress is stunning. And of course, Kate Moss. I found it classy that she asked Galliano to design it. Thank you, ITG.

Gwen Stefani's dip-dyed dress was kind of a huge moment for me back then. I've never been a fan of white weddings, but I wouldn't mind something leaning towards champagne, a la Ms. Bradshaw.

  • Tori

now a DIY bridal makeup tutorial?!

    • Verity

Yes please - I'm getting married in September and it would be great to get some ideas!

  • katie chambers

I might be the only female who has never thought about "her wedding" as I have never wanted to get married... but Jane and Serge look pretty damned great.

  • Pineapple Bob

Jane and Serge look fabulous but never married.

  • mia

and also Margherita Missoni..? Her dress/wedding was so gorgeous!!

  • eliza

Lily Aldridge and Caleb Followill. They were gorgoeus, romantic and cool.

  • http://www.magalic.com/ Magali

David Bowie & Iman - not the wedding, just a photoshoot.

  • beeswaxnoneofyour

Carolyn Bessette Kennedy and Kristen McMenamy's wedding looks have always been two of my favorites.

  • bzgh

    Who is # 52?

  • CherHorowitz

I adore simplicity. Jane Birkin, Carolyn Bissette, Cindy Crawford -- you did it right.

  • sam

i remember both kristen and stella's gowns so ahead of their time!

just curious why you don't credit your sources?

I really still love Gwen's dress. Just the right amount of tradition and rock and roll!
