Earlier this week, news broke that Kate Upton is set to star alongside Leslie Mann, Cameron Diaz, and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (Jamie Lanister for all of you GoT fans, or just an incredibly attractive man for the rest of you) in a comedy called The Other Woman. It's a highly plausible story of how three women team up to exact vengeance on their shared/cheating boyfriend. Sure, Kate may have made the transformation from Sports Illustrated model to Vogue favorite, but can she take it one step further, like a rare few leggy ladies before her and become a bonafide star of the silver screen?
We all know the story of how Cameron became Mary and Charlize became a Monster, but there are countless other mannequins who found major success behind one camera and not the other, moving one. Consider the Nineties Supes: Naomi, Kate, Cindy, Christy, Claudia—a lot of Cs!—plus Tyra, Stephanie, Shalom, Heidi, etc. They dominated the runways, the magazines, and our hearts…or, at the very least, our minds, as we slipped on spandex and hit the gym. Nowadays, many of these women are seeing a career resurgence, whether through their original line of work or the increasingly common reality-TV hosting gig. But in the late '90s and early aughts, there was one other place you could find your favorite models: on the big screen. Some seem to have been in on the joke (e.g., Gisele in The Devil Wears Prada), while others, well, they might have been gunning for an Oscar. Either way, take a look back at our beloved Supes acting their hearts out. May the force of Naomi-in-Spike-Lee's-Girl-6 be with you, Kate Upton. (Though he was an actor playing a model, and so it doesn't technically count, here's a fun fact: True Blood's Alexander Skarsgård played Meekus in 2001's Zoolander.)
Up next: When Actresses Sing. No, just kidding. We wouldn’t do that to you.
