Falling With Grace

We’ve all taken a spill. Whether from encountering an awkward crack in the sidewalk, a random momentary loss of balance, stepping on a banana peel (like the cartoons would have you believe), or maybe it was because you were wearing a jean skirt and walking up the steps to school as a high-school freshman with your crush standing at the top, not picking your feet up high enough, and rolling down the stairs with your skirt climbing higher and higher with each step... What? That isn’t a common occurrence? Huh. In any event, the point is: it happens to everyone. That said, you're in a much smaller club if your fall was witnessed by 40.3 million viewers and occurred right after winning your first Oscar at the ripe age of twenty-two.

In a moment that instantly became GIF-ed to death, Jennifer Lawrence’s career- (and life-) making Best Actress win was tainted by her blunder on the just-waxed steps of LA's Dolby Theater on Sunday evening. And instead of letting it become the most embarrassing thing to ever happen to her, she somehow managed to make it perhaps her most charming incident to date. She inspired countless Tweets, Facebook posts, and Buzzfeed articles discussing her appeal and pointing out our collective desire to be her best friend. As she held her crumbled stance on the steps in that unwieldy Dior gown for one extra beat, she became one of us. Whether she was thinking of a "bad word beginning with the letter ‘F’" or letting the excitement of the last few months sink in, we, the viewers, were reminded that she is still just a person who occasionally falls down, no matter how inopportune the scenario. Jennifer, we love you. Please, please, come hang out with us. We’ll do your hair and nails.

Also, we're here to make you feel better. All the cool kids fall down! Naomi Campbell falls down! Here, a review of the guys and gals who know how to stumble with style.

In the words of the great—and regretfully, recently disbanded—band Chumbawamba: “I get knocked down, But I get up again, You’re never going to keep me down…”

P.S.: This lady may not be famous for anything else, but she certainly achieved Internet infamy with this:

And if you weren't satisfied yet, here's the unlucky Destiny's Child member Michelle Williams taking a spill and Kelly Rowland not really worrying about it. Way to pick yourself back up, Michelle:

Oh my god, she's fashion roadkill!

In pictures, her moment on the stairs looks like a really beautiful fashion moment, in a way, like something out of a fashion "in-house" short film....and with the lights illuminating the gown from underneath, it's really a lovely shot for me.

I know, it's very Steven Meisel. Or Miles Aldridge/ Vogue Italia. Or something. I'm into it.

  • Aubrey Green

I actually slipped on a banana peel.

      I want more details. x

It was in a parking lot, which isn't really where you would think a banana peel would be; not that you think about where banana peels are - I was walking into the store from the parking lot and lost my balance, almost fell on my ass; until a guy caught me - I promise, he really did - (no, I wasn't filming a movie) - I looked down and couldn't stop laughing because like you said, "like cartoons would have you believe" - I looked at myself to make sure that I hadn't in fact turned to clay or something...to my disappointment I hadn't turned into Jessica Rabbit.

Where is Whitney Port falling from the stairs? You were there with her Emily! By not putting this up you show your loyalty to an ex-colleague of course. Have you been in touch with her lately?

  • Katherine

LOVE that SATC episode. Falling is not a big deal, everyone does it! If anything, people love Jennifer Lawrence more for it now.

Thank you for these chic splats! The absence of schadenfreude here is so refreshing -- as a clumsy person (CV: icy stairs at rush hour on the Metro, school play, New Year's gala) it's great to see falling and getting back up as actually empowering.

Gotta love how comfortable J. Law is in her own skin.

oh no you didn't just quote tubthumping

hahaha I thought that Jennifer really made the best of her fall, she made it seem so less embrassing by embracing it. I love her

Does anyone else remember when Carrie fell in the Dior shop in Paris in the first part the series finale? I remember rewinding back to that part over and over because it was so hysterical

  • Diana

What about Whitney Port falling with Emily on TV???????

  • ClosetCravings

There are far worse things in life than falling wearing Dior while accepting your Oscar. Love her. The incident did make me think of Whitney Port's fall.

I LOVE THAT SEX IN THE CITY EPISODE!! Okay, my favorite part about that episode is the fact that Carrie continuously tells the designers and makeup artists that she isn't a model and does not want to embarrass herself. When she finally gets on stage, she falls, gracefully, and remembers that she has to keep on going and show the world that she isn't a supermodel, but she has just as much grace and confidence as they do. So she does. And it is stunning!

    I Love you Carrie! xxx

I just love her! She really does, as you say, fall with grace, and makes us all love her more for it.

omg i always felt so sad for the poor grape lady :(

  • Jess

I hate to laugh at this (kinda), but this just made my day...why is it the singers literally just crash? Of course, the models fall gracefully...

  • chicnoir

I can't believe you posted the grape lady video. One of the funniest Youtube videos of all time.
