When Gaultier sent a bevy of Birkin look-alikes down the runway last month in Paris, it got us thinking; well, who wouldn’t want to be Jane Birkin, any day of the week? Next Wednesday’s festivities are as good an excuse as you’re going to get for blatantly trying on the infamous style icon for size. Snag a basket (or a Birkin bag, if you’re able), find a slick and swarthy friend to play your Serge and get ready to croon 'Je t’aime, moi non plus' all night long. Get the Gaultier look:

Go for insouciant denim-on-denim or directly channel Gaultier's look (for Constance Jablonski) with this True Religion maxi skirt (we’d encourage you to slit it up the front, Jane wasn’t scared of showing some leg), or MiH Marrakesh mid-rise flares paired with J.Crew’s Keeper Chambray shirt (buttoned low), or with a shrunken vest in a complimentary color. Top with a shaggy, late-'60s-style vest, and pair with kicky sandals. (Yes, a shaggy fur vest AND sandals. It was the '70s! Weather wasn't a thing, yet.)

The key is to keep your face fresh: blend Chanel’s Vitalumière Aqua Ultra Light over the skin, using Laura Mercier's Secret Brightner where necessary (under eyes, blemishes, etc.) and contouring with Tom Ford's Shade & Illuminate duo. Buff up your brows with Benefit’s Instant Brow Pencil and use a light hand all over your eyelids with Nars’ Soft Touch Shadow Pencil in Skorpios, drawing a soft line across the crease. Line all around your eye, but with special attention to the lower lashline, using Bobbi Brown's Kohl Eyeliner and top with Japonesque’s Complete Lash Set (or Too Faced Better Than False Lashes, if you’re not a particularly steady hand). Glaze on some Armani Sheer Lipstick in Sunset Pink for a complimentary glow, toss some Hairdresser’s Invisible Oil through your locks, queue up some on inspirational tunes and you’re ready. Now where’s that Serge...?

Oh, what I would give to have that effortless Jane Birkin hair. I guess I'll have to settle for her makeup look instead. Thanks for breaking it down, step by step.

The Nars pencil should not be used as an eyeliner but as an accent, right? I think I know what you are describing; Charlotte Tilsbury has used this look somewhere, but a video tutorial would be helpful.
