As for the person responsible, it's one Mr. Joe Zee, Elle's creative director and a man who clearly has a sixth sense for when a girl could use a little fringe. Back in 2003, during his days at W, Zee transformed Britney Spears for a cover story wherein she revealed she'd been deflowered by Justin Timberlake and scolded the singer for spilling the beans about their breakup to Barbara Walters.
On the brink of her split from Tom Cruise, and under Zee's (psychic!) direction, Holmes got a new look for her August Elle cover. "The bangs and straight hair was really a collaboration between Katie, myself and Andy Lecompte, the hairstylist," Zee says. "We wanted something that was distinctly Katie, but yet a new way we haven't seen her. It was almost reminiscent of early Cher and that type of carefree glamour."
Looking good, Holmes. And good looking out, Zee.
