It’s holiday party season, and do you know what that means? Red lips! Glitter nail polish! Shimmery eye shadows! Sequins on your eyelids!
Yes, that’s right—sequins. Backstage at Givenchy’s Spring 2012 show in October, Pat McGrath sliced a single silver sequin in half and strategically placed each crescent on the upper and lower lash lines. Natalia and Gisele glided down the runway with nearly bare faces and au naturel hair, their eyes flashing in the light with every blink. It was one of my favorite looks of the month. And I’ve been dying to try it out ever since.
So, Josephine popped by the other day for a little bit of runway-to-reality fun. We followed Pat’s lead and kept the face fresh, focusing on glowing skin: cleansed and well-moisturized, spot-correcting with concealer as needed. I used CoverGirl’s Intense ShadowBlast in Beige Blaze as a highlighter, dabbing it across the cheekbones, under the eyebrows, on the inner corners of the eyes, down the bridge of the nose and on the Cupid’s Bow. Now for the sequins. I applied them with false eyelash glue from Duane Reade, a tweezer, and a very steady hand. The upper and lower eyelids should be dry—use a clean eye shadow brush to lightly dust the area with translucent powder first. Dot the back of the crescents with the tiniest amount of glue and place them just above (and below) the pupil, right against the lash line. The two halves should mirror each other when your eyes are closed. (This took several attempts...if you need to try again, just peel the sequin off and use makeup remover and a cotton swap to remove the glue before starting over.) Add a dab of Eight Hour Cream on the lips, a white leather le smoking by Reed Krakoff, and jewels from Repossi, and voilà: the coolest party look around.
I’ll be hitting the town with my sequined lids on Saturday evening... Would you, could you?
