Make Up For Ever HD Powder

Make Up For Ever HD Powder

Last weekend, I had a glamour party at my house—totally by accident. My friends came over one day to catch up on American Idol, and by the end of the hang, I’d given three mini-facials and makeup tutorials. After all, they want to know about all the goodies I’m testing—what works and what doesn't. And even if I don’t have all the answers (let’s not kid ourselves), I can do their makeup, ITG-style.

There are a handful of products that I use across the board, from models to friends to myself, and one of my favorites is Make Up For Ever HD Microfinish Powder. This is not your average loose powder. It’s one-shade-fits-all: white in the jar, 100% sheer on the skin. Truly—I’ve used this on the full spectrum of skin tones. Now, why use a loose powder, anyway? In the past I’ve found them too mattifying, and my favorite—favorite—thing is a nice, radiant sheen to the face. But, to keep sheen from crossing over into shine territory, you need a little something something. That something is this powder. I dust it all over a freshly moisturized and made up face with a big fluffy brush, and, as Steven Tyler effused on one episode of AI, “That's the goop that great stuff is made from.”

Love this blog - but serious Qs: Isn't this the makeup that Uma Thurman and Nicole Kidman were wearing that caused all the confusion when it appeared they had white stuff on their faces at events? How does it look when you take a picture? Is there a way to remedy the white appearance in pics?

    • admin

Hi Amanda! I can't speak for anyone else, but I've used this in a bunch of "The Makeup" shoots here--all with flash--and haven't had any problem with whiteness...I've also been using it on myself almost every day for the past month and have been really pleased. I suppose just like any other powder, a little goes a long way. XEmily

        Great - thanks Emily!

wow, i'm really surprised to hear you used this powder in photos and didn't get the crazy white situation. this youtube vid from straight shooter, wayne goss suggests it's a real problem for the powder, simply because it's not meant for photography. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fM4foAf1tHc

You literally read my mind. Was looking for something to let the glow shine through, without making me unwontedly matte. Merci! - CC

Do you know how this compares to Bare Minerals' Mineral Veil?

    • admin

Hi Sherry--I like Bare Minerals' Mineral Veil a lot too; the MUFE allows for slightly more dewiness to show through, in my opinion, so just depends how 'done' you want to look. XEmily

How long does a jar of this last for you?

Does this contain shimmer? I currently use the Laura Mercier one during the day and am looking for something that'll be good for evening wear.

I have been trying to find a glowy powder that sets but still gives sheen. So does this allow forcanexisting sheen fromyour base to shine through or add a sheen itself?

I have this and while I love the softness it adds to my skin, I hate that when I use it as a finishing powder I feel like it takes away some of the foundation/concealer I've already applied.
I do like the fact that it will stay put for a LONG time - I've applied this at the beginning of a night out - and when I come home, it's still there.

Have you ever tried Guerlain Météorites? It has the same gorgeous effect on skin. I have the pressed powder version and it has become one of my must-haves.

I love the Koh Gen Do Maifanshi Natural Lighting Powder! It looks completely natural with a very slight sheen and stays looking amazing all day and even all night. I once went to bed in it after a long day and woke up with my face still looking intact. I find all of the Koh Gen Do products to be exceptional!

    Hi Emily,

I love your blog. It's really sophisticated, and it doesn't make me feel too overwhelmed. Some makeup blogs give 10,000 swatches and makeup how-tos and for me it was a bit much to digest. I love it as my Sunday read when I am away from the office, relaxing and blogsurfing.

Anyways, I really highly recommend Shiseido's translucent pressed powder for a try as an alternative! I think it's very user-friendly as it is pressed and it holds my makeup intact without blotting out too much shine.
