Jane Keltner de Valle

“I'm a firm believer that it starts from the inside out. Eat healthy, take vitamins, drink a ton of water, stay active, and get plenty of sleep. Replenish and restore! To me, that's a million times more meaningful than any cream you slather on your face. I don't buy into the $700 crushed-diamond miracle cream thing. No lotion is going to erase lines or give you perfect skin! It just isn't. I like really simple skincare products. I wash my face with Cetaphil, which is very gentle and doesn't strip or dry your skin. For eye makeup remover, Lancôme Bi-Facil is my favorite, the best. It gets everything off, and it doesn't dry out your skin at all. I've been lining my eyes every day since I was 16 years old, so I consider myself an expert in that arena! For face creams, I love, love, love La Roche Posay. My skin is really sensitive, and with anything else it freaks out. I use the Nutritic at night—it's super hydrating—and the Rosalaic with SPF during the day. And I wear SPF everyday, regardless of whether it's hailing outside. I think protecting your skin from the sun and elements is the best anti-aging fighter out there. I don't have one go-to eye cream. I try different ones, usually whatever what our amazing beauty director Eva generously sends my way. Right now I'm using a Clarins one with SPF for day and a Fresh black tea one at night. And that's it for skincare. I don't get facials or do scrubs or peels. The less I do, the happier my skin seems to be.

I think a healthy, clear base is the most important starting point. The biggest beauty faux pas for me is caked on foundation. You aren't fooling anyone! It's aging and makes you look like a drag queen. So, needless to say, I'm not a big foundation wearer! Although Sara Glick, a makeup artist I've worked with a lot at Teen VOGUE and who I adore, did introduce me to a Bare Escentuals bare minerals foundation that I like. It looks like a loose powder, and it's super light. It kind of disappears into your skin. If I have any redness, I'll use it to tone that down. But my basic everyday makeup is under eye concealer—I like Lancôme's Effacernes for that. Clinique Quickliner For Eyes in Slate—it's a touch softer than black, the perfect shade, and it never smudges. I've tried every liner on the market, and I always come back to this one. Lancôme mascara in black—they make the best mascaras, hands down. Définicils has always been my go-to, but lately I've gotten into the one with the vibrating brush. It sounds gimmicky, but it really works. And then Chanel tweed pink blush. It's a nice soft shade for people who are really pale, like me!

I'm totally boring when it comes to manicures and pedicures. I never do polish on my hands. I just like a clean, short nail. I go to a great manicurist named Carol at Element Beauty Lounge in the East Village, and she doesn't get it at all. Every time I go, she asks me, 'Are you sure you don't want to try a color? Not even clear?' I do like a soft whitish-pink on my toes, though. Essie's Limo-Scene.

Gina at Serge Normant does my highlights, and Ashley Javier cuts my hair. A good cut and color go a long way, and they are both fantastic. I'm one of those people whose hair can really affect their mood. It sounds silly, but it's true. And I do splurge on blowouts. I treat myself to them fairly regularly. But I only wash my hair every 3 or 4 days. I actually like it better after I've slept on it one or two nights. It gets a little more texture and movement, a little less perfect."

I love this, completely agree with everything she said about inside out beauty. Jane is one of my favourites, love her work and of course street style!

I love this woman and her beauty routine, super simple and straightforward! I need to work on the inside part, yummy fat food is my worst enemy haha. I think it's true how too much foundation can age a person if she isn't too careful on the application part. I'm such a pedi and manicure girl though, I do prefer short nails (easier to type). I can never go 3 or 4 days without washing my hair because it's so darn oily! I hate how I have to wash my hair daily in order to feel clean and be clean. The downside is of course, my hair is super dry. I love love her hair here-- so smooth, soft, glossy and flawless! Great article!

i completely agree. the key to life, beauty and youth is very simple... just eat well and stay active. anything else is just fake and a scam :)

I will neeed to refer to this post when I contemplate buying a $100 eye cream! I agree with everything she says and I need to remember it when the sales associates are trying to push a cream that promises to erase fine lines and under eye bagginess!

    Beautiful, and such perfec-looking skin.
I know I have said this before but I like the honesty of the people you interview.
I saw her, and you by the way, on the teenvogue handbook and was curious to know more. So thanks for the interview
    Keep up the great work

I definitely agree as well. I do not buy into the super expensive creams and all that....its not going to make lines go away and create flawless skin. A simple routine of washing your face and moisturizing seems to do just fine !

She's gorgeous! I totally agree with her in the first part, but I totally splurge on skincare. :)

I thinks she's amazing and what she said makes me look at beauty a bit differently.

  • http://whatabind.blogspot.com/ Amanda

I completely agree with the inside-out approach to beauty. But, I still love my skincare products and a little pampering for fun!

Essie's Limo-Scene is my favorite, too. It's the perfect clean, pale pink. Even though there are thousands of light pinks on the market, I haven't found another color quite like it.

I dont know... She is very lucky to have a skin that all it needs is cetaphil. If I did that, my pores would look horrible after a few weeks (must exfoliate, must scrab, love facials). I do agree with her opinion on foundation and beauty inside-out.

  • http://amberfairweather.bloodspot.com Amber

I really like her philosophy. People don't realize that the first step to beauty is taking care of yourself. There's no lipgloss that can imitate that!

loving your addictive blog and your interview style, emily. i DO wish you would focus some more on quote unquote older fashion insiders. i turned fifty last year and would love to find out more about their beauty routines, including laser and surgical stuff. thanks!

Jane is stunning. It's refreshing to hear that she uses Cetaphil. I have been using that on my face since I was a baby. I love that she speaks about eating healthy, drinking water, working out etc. This makes all the difference in your skin. Emily, keep these posts coming- they are wonderful!

It is ironic how she says that “I’m a firm believer that it starts from the inside out. Eat healthy, take vitamins, drink a ton of water, stay active, and get plenty of sleep. Replenish and restore! To me, that’s a million times more meaningful than any cream you slather on your face." and yet the very thing that is going on her face are suffocated by chemicals! I'm not picking on her specifically, but it general, society needs to realise that if you want to be a believer of starting from inside out, sure, eat healthily and naturally but also take a look at the numerous products you slather on your skin, lips, hair that are not as healthy and try to turn to organics.

We need to promote good organically raw skincare!!!

This is the best beauty routine I've read in months. I seriously will swear by this forever. It's light and simple and extremely beautiful. Thank you, Jane!
